| weight gain supplement~need recommendation Dolly just turned 3 and weighs only two and a half pounds. she has not gained any weight since she was 8 month old currently she's on EVO red meat with missing link free fed, also EVO canned rabbit meat for dinner daily. I've just got her Pet-Tinic by Pfizer per vet recommendation. but I would like to get an opinion from here since I want to hear experiences. and I would really want something as natural as possible since I don't want to put too much stress on her liver with over supplementation! any input will be greatly appreciated

| you actually don't need a "supplement" at all. I was asking Layla's nutritionist on behalf of a friend who's yorkie also needed to gain weight and she said to just add carbs to their diet- she suggests, potato, sweet potato but you can also use brown rice, whole wheat pasta. Just mix it in there daily. It's natural- no strain on her liver and cheaper |

| Potato can be baked or boiled or possibly steamed...never tried that. Does Dolly have any underlying medical problems? Has blood work been done to rule out things like EPI if she is too skinny but eats a good amount? Adding carbs is a great idea but just remember if you add more than 10% unbalanced human food or dog treats, you may need to add supplements. Alternatively, you can just feed more canned food. I don't see the need to add supplements if she can gain weight on food alone. Maybe she just has fast metabolism and needs more calories? Ellie was quite skinny for awhile. Her diet is pretty high in carbs but she wasn't getting enough calories, so I increased her food intake by 50%.

| my girls get sweet potatos and salmon for dinner. I just boil the sweet potatos and mash them like the reg mashed potatos. they love it! i have a same problem with my youngest also. She is very very healthy and she eats more than her sisters but won't gain an ounce. she is a little over 1 and weighs 2.5lb also. I think some pups just don't gain any weight no matter what. I have her tested for everything and she is healthy. And also she is super active and always moving around and playing around. Maybe that's how she burns her calories and stay trim..lol

I had her tested for liver shunt since shes having hard time gaining weight. but everything came out normal. her vet was thinking about EPI but she doesn't have any of the clinical signs of EPI. she's small but shes never lost weight, and shes got a very healthy digestive system other than not gaining weight, very few vomit or diarrhea. maybe we should have her tested anyways. yes, Im worried about if I add too much carb to her diet then she might not be able to eat as much regular food as she needs, then I have to supplement her diet, which is something I don't want to/vet doesn't like since it would put too much stress on her liver. her vet has told me to stop Desuquin for the same reason since her LP is so mild. I free feed Dolly on dry food, maybe I should give her more can food? but that worries me about her dental problem (shes got bad teeth and is getting a dental on Thursday).

| lol potato is not Layla's favorite either- can you mix it into her wet food? I have to mix Layla's food all up for her to eat it- otherwise she'd pick out the veggies and potato she's a meat girl |

Ellie is liver compromised and still takes Cosequin. It isn't optiminal for her but I want some piece of mind for her knees. Glucosamine is very safe. It shouldn't affect a healthy dog's liver at all. Ellie had horrible teeth on kibble and now that they are kept up with, they are much better and she eats homecooked. Dental problems being connected to soft foods would be hard to scientifically prove, especially if the teeth are brushed.

and shes a lil weido, she loves dog food but hates human food: meat, fish, vege, etc.(only likes duck meat) so that makes it extra hard to supplement her diet thanks for the great information, your girls are so adorable

but I do mix missing link with Glucosamine in Dolly's food, will that be enough to help her knee/joints? huh, I really wonder why she has such bad teeth. I give exactly the same care and attention to my chi and Dolly's teeth, my chi has sparkling white teeth, but Dolly's... just curious, what kind of homecooked food do you feed Ellie? thanks so much, you have helped us so much by providing valuable information. now we always have a place for a second opinion
