| HELP!!! Nahla in HEAT! I'm starting to freak out and need some help!!! Our vet told us we needed to get Nahla spayed when she was 7 months old. She's 7 months old and over the weekend I noticed her licking herself....ALOT. Right now she is laying on the bed beside me and her pee-pee (vulva I think they call it) is really swollen!!!! I have Mufasa who is my male yorkie. What do I do? I don't want Nahla having puppies and now that I think she is coming into heat is it too late to get her spayed? I'm going to call the vet first thing in the morning but I need some advice right now. First: When is the "fertile" cycle of heat. If I just noticed her pee-pee swollen tonight could she possibly get pregnant NOW? Second: Do I need to keep her and Mufasa away from each other? I have NO IDEA how to do that. Third: Will the vet spay Nahla if she is already in heat? MOST IMPORTANTLY: If the vet will spay her now because she is coming into heat will it hurt her? I don't want anything to happen to my precious baby and worry about her having surgery since she is already in heat (I think). What do you guys think? HELP! |

| You do need to keep them seperated. It only takes a split second for her to get pregnant. You could put panties on her and a belly band on him. I've read it's best to wait until her heat is done before you spay her.

| Chloe is in heat now too , but luckily I only have girl dogs. I put diapers on mine to help with any mess , and you could also put a onesie or something on her to help keep him from getting to her I have heard that a male will do anything to get to her so you will have to keep them in separate rooms with closed doors if you are not right there holding her or watching her. Wait till after her heat is completely over to have her spayed. It is dangerous to do it when they are in heat. They can bleed alot more.

| You will have to wait until her heat cycle is over to have her spayed. The blood vessels in her uterus are engorged with blood and the risk of bleeding is too high now. Can your male stay at someone else house while she is in heat? That is the only real way to keep him from getting her pregnant. Belly bands, diapers, gates, etc will not work. Were you planning on getting him neutered? Now would be the time to do it. He will drive you nuts for the next few weeks if he in in the same house. He will do every to get to her and may succeed. Why did your vet tell you to wait until she was seven months old to spay her? If she had been spayed right at six months this could have been avoided. |

| You need to keep them SEPARATED at all times! Not for one second should you leave them alone. Do you plan on getting Moustafa neutered? Maybe now is the time to look into this. Using diapers, onsies and belly bands will not stop them from mating if they are allowed to be together.

| My vet said he doesn't spay until the females are 7 months old.....why did he tell me this? Because that's just what he does. I agree if I would have had her fixed at 6 months I could have avoided this but how am I supposed to know? I was going by what my vet said. My husband doesn't want to get Mufasa fixed because we are thinking about studding him out in the future. I don't have anywhere for Mufasa to go because everyone I know has male dogs and Mufasa likes to mark everything if I take him to their houses. I don't know what to do. |

| You will have to Kennel him and take him out side without her. Keep a diaper on her and a belly band on him. For the next 3 weeks you will have to keep them apart. It just takes a split second for this to happen so be very careful. Even with the diaper and the belly band the male will manage to get his job done so I think Kennel is the best. |

| Vets will spay dogs when they're in heat, it does cost more $ though As far as not neutering your male, you may want to let your hubby know, that once you use a male for breeding, they will constantly be marking everywhere, including inside your house. The females get pg when the bleeding is done, but, you do need to keep them separated, and if possible, I would take one or the other to a freinds or relatives house where there are no intact males |

| Nahla is getting spayed on Friday. THANK GOODNESS!!!! The vet said that since she has already started her heat cycle that after she is spayed I will still have to keep them separated until the heat cycle is over. I'm trying to find a large kennel or carrier right now. Thanks for all the advice! |
