My vet recommends waiting 2-4 weeks after the last set of vaccines. I wouldn't give them together, actually I'm considering not giving the rabies vacc at all (not the law in my area)!

No! The rabies shot should always be given separately from the other vaccines as it can cause a serious reaction. Some vet techs (and even vets) aren't that familiar with how to treat toy breed dogs. The lepto vaccine is a perfect example. Many vets automatically give Yorkies, Maltese, etc. the 5 in 1 vaccine that contains lepto without realizing that lepto can be deadly for toy breeds.

Good for you for asking before allowing your vet to go ahead with it!

Also, when you go follow up on your requests! If you do not enforce your wishes , then they will do it anyway

Before giving ANY of the vaccines make certain you ask what it is they are giving and be there when administered!

I concur.
The rabies vaccine should never be given on the same day as any other vaccine. Even if the vet doesn't agree, he should respect your wishes because you aren't hurting anything by waiting. If he gives you a hard time, it's time to find a new vet anyway...

I think that with your pets medical care, as you would your own, you should have the final say in the treatment.

We love our vet and she listens and asks questions and really respects our wishes.

I wasn't aware of thae problem with getting shots ast the same time. Nw I will have to go back and look at the medical records and see how it was done.

I wonder why someone would not get the rabies shot? Please advise.

Thanks,

I don't feel it's necessary for Missy, and I'd like to do as few vaccines as possible. My mind isn't totally made up, we will see. She's only 5 months right now. The reactions that some Yorkies have to the rabies vaccine really scares me! I need to continue doing some more research before I decide for sure.

My youngest skinkid had terrible reactions to the normal childhood immunizations. My paediatrician gave him diluted doses...20% strength...on a monthly basis until he had the full amount necessary.

Perhaps you can do something like this for Missy? Unless she never ever goes outside, unless she will never ever have a chance of meeting a rabid squirrel, raccoon, rat or other dog, then she needs to be immunized. Rabies is fatal and the dying is prolonged and horribly painful. I would rather protect my babies from that possibility.

Rabies isn't very common in some areas and this is the vaccine with the most reactions. A report was released saying that between 2004-2007 there were 10,000 adverse effects reported. Five percent of these were death. Someone that used to be with the FDA estimated that only 1% of reactions are reported. So it is really a scary vaccine. With Ellie's lifestyle, I would love to have the choice not to vaccinate. She is never outside without someone and I think that I have about as much chance of getting it from a wild animal as she does (which is extremely slim).

I asked my vet about giving Missy a smaller dose and she said that they don't do that because a small dog doesnt require less of the vaccine as a large dog. An immune system is an immune system, all sizes of dogs need the same dose.

There are only ever 10-18 cases of rabies found in bats in my entire province for the last 10 yrs. One human has died from it, and one cat. Both, were bitten by bats. The man was actually bitten by a bat and died several months later because he didn't get treatment.

Missy does not go outside AT ALL. She pees on peepads, and goes in a carrier when I take her out and about. She may go for little walks around our neighbourhood in the future, but I highly doubt we will encounter a rabid bat while doing that. I think the chances of ME getting bit by a rabid bat are higher then Missy's are. As I said though, we will see. If things change, and she's going out in the yard by herself (not likely, we do have owls, eagles etc)...or I'm taking her camping or what not, then she will get the vaccine. My vet said that it can be given at anytime, and thinks it's up to me to decide what's best for Missy.

Thanks for all that information. I have been doing some research but haven't found out anything significant. More reading coming up.

We did get the rabies shot becase we live close to Canada and do plan to go there and take Tiki. Proof of rabies vaccination is required to enter Canada. They want the information signed by the vet with expiration date of the vaccine used on the papers too. We have her rabies tag but the Canada rules say the piece of paper is more valid than the tag.

Also some time in the future, we may try to travel to Hawaii and stay a month. She has to have the shot to enter Hawaii too. Even the grooming salon requires proof of all shots.

Then in 2 or 3 years we are going to travel from the NW to the East Coast, hitting as many states as we can. So I imagine she will need to have the shot for that too, never knowing what we may run into.

We have eagles, raccoons, rats that somehow come up through the sewers (my neighbors have found them in their yard and we actually found on in our attic. Trap got it though. It had the most beautiful shiny beige coat.)

At any rate, Tiki does not go outside without one of us and we keep our eyes on her at all times. And it has to be outside because she refuses to do anything on the potty pad and hasn't for at least 2 years. Just can't take a chance on anything happening to her so gotta watch at all times. Not unlike we did with our other children..

Her brother just got here for a playdate. They are busy running around he house chasing each other. Mom had to have her nails done. We do sitting for each other. She will babysit Tiki and I will babysit Buddy.

Her husband made the comment that how often is it that litter mates ever get to see each other again, let alone play together all of their lives. We think it is pretty cool. And, they don't just play all of the time. We think they just like being together cuz they will each get a toy and lay down and chew on it. o cute!!!

Myrna, Proud Mom of Tiki! We love her so much!

Yup, the paper is far more important than the tag. Some vets don't even give the tags.

About Hawaii, I'm sure it's a nice place to visit but it is a rabies free state and they are very strict. She will need one or two rabies shots before going and I think she has to be flied into the capital via cargo to be processed. I could be wrong but I heard it is terribly travelling with your pup there...

I have checked into all of the rules. For a brief time, they could travel in a traveling crate under the seat and had to stay there te entire time. Well, I could NOT ever do that. They also had to be taken to quarantine to be checked for fleas, ticks, etc, and the paperwork all had to be checked and they would be released to owner. Now I find that those rules have changed again. They need to haver had their last rabies shot within the last 2 years and it has to be the 2nd one so pups can't go. They mainly relaxed the qwuarantine rules becuse a lot of Hawaii residents wanted to travel with their pets and didn't want to have to quarantine the pets for the required 30 days. It is a long drawn out process and bloodhas to be sent to some lab in Nevada, a whole lot of bother at least 120 days before planned departure. ASll being said, unless they have another rule change or she gets her service dog certification, we won't be going, cuz I won't leave her home. Did that in September for 12 days and it jjust about killed me. At least I knew she was home with her Dad.
