| How often do you rotate foods? I thought I saw on here where someone said to rotate foods every week or two. Does this sound right? It takes me about a week to transition between foods, so I thought changing once a month would be often enough. How often do you rotate foods?

| Never. He loves his kibble so why change it. If it ain't broke why fix it? IMO if you find something they like and are healthy why change it? Too much upsetting the tummy I would think. |

| A week or two is too often. We rotate every or every other 12.5lb bag which equates to every 6 or every 12 weeks. We rotate first between flavors and then between brands.

| I have Wookie on the rotation diet, which means I am rotating between types of food. I give him kibble in the morning and a raw medallion in the evening. You are also supposed to rotate types of protein (beef, chicken, etc) on it, but I just started and am not going to rotate til I am done with one. I don't think it would be that often though. Depends on how well he does with it. You can read more about the rotation diet on the Natures Variety website if that is the type of rotating you are interested in.

| Well when I started with Natures Variety rotation my plan was to change flavors ( but not the brand ) of dry kibble either every or every other bag , change the canned flavors once a week , and eventually add the raw changing that flavor every /every other bag. BUT my girls didn't do well on the NV kibble so we are trying Wellness core. I am feeding Wellness core original kibble ( this is their first bag) and will go through one more bag to make sure they are good with it , then I will try the Ocean Core kibble and if they are good on on both flavors of core I will rotate the flavors every or every other bag . The canned , I change flavors every week . I don't plan on changing brands unless they don't do well on it but I do like to change the flavors and protein sources within the brand I am using.

I finally found something that my dogs will eat and its good for them, why on earth would I change it. Unless you count varying between canned flavors (chicken/sweet potatoes and lamb/sweet potatoes) of the same brand food, rotating thier food, then Im guilty..

I'm glad yours are doing well on it. I couldn't buy the NV Instinct (which is what I had wanted to try) at any local shop here. They only sold the NV prairie kibble and some NV raw varieties . So I tried that and the prairie kibble gave them lots and lots of poo ! So I just went with Wellness core which seems to be working.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | You know only a few companies recommend this rotation of food; I'm not convinced it's a good idea. The general consensus among vets seems to be to find a good food and stick with it. I know many of you don't think vets know anything in the area of nutrition, but the safest method is sticking to what works, and don't change unless there is scientific evidence that it's better to rotate. Human studies have shown the healthiest people have the most limited diets, and eat the same thing every day. When a new food is introduced, dogs are even more prone to stomach upsets than humans. If the information you're getting is from dog food companies and the people who sell the food, I would be very leery. I would avoid any company who says that when dogs eat their food they might purge because they are getting rid of all the toxins from their old food. This is such nonsense, and I can't believe how many people accept this.

Do you mean don't change/rotate brands or don't change/rotate flavors within the same brand?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I see no harm in rotating flavors, if the ingredients are essentially the same; it just that very little is known about the effects of the rotation diets some manufactures are suggesting. I think when your dog is vomiting and experiencing diarrhea it's always difficult for him, and not a good thing. This is a big stressor and can lower his resistance to other things. I guess it depends on how your dog responds.

| Why rotate a food if the dog is eating it, enjoying it and is healthy? Dogs, unlike humans, don't get bored with food. They get treats during the day, bones to chew etc, so they do get variety. Also some cook ,as I do, adding to the kibble fresh chicken and veggies. I would not change the kibble. I did once using the same brand different flavor and Buddy got the runs! I donated the bag and I now stick to the one he likes. I wouldn't think of rotating his food any longer. |

gotcha. I agree , I like to rotate flavors in the same brand , but don't think mine would do well if I kept rotating different brands. We had a hard enough time finding one that works for them !
