| Any Advice for me? My 8 month old puppy's in heat :( I just discovered that my 8 month old puppy is in heat. Her name is Sadie, she's about 3 1/2 lbs... I have another Yorkie named Bentley he is a 2 yr old male and no he is not neutered. I wanted to have a litter of puppies eventually but she is still too young. What do I do to make her more comfortable, and how do I keep her from getting pregnant right now? Bentley does not seem very interested in her right now, but I know that he will be. |

| Just snuggle her. He should become interested soon and it may end up being very difficult to keep them separate. It is best to take one of them to someone elses house so there are no accidents. Otherwise they will have to stay separated by closed doors but one slip up and she may end up pregnant which would not be healthy at this age. Make sure you don't just crate one of them because they can still tie. If a female is spayed before her first heat her chances of developing mammary cancer are less than .5%. If she is spayed after her first heat and before her second her chances go up to 8% and if she is spayed anytime after her second heat it goes up to 26%.

| I'm starting to feel like an irresponsible dog owner for not having her spayed, she wouldn't even be going through this if I would have gotten her spayed. I'm freaking out now thinking that she is going to get pregnant and die. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | You sound just like my neighbor. My neighbor had a male yorkie, and then bought a small female yorkie to breed them. However, until the female was old enough to breed, when she would go into heat, my neighbor bought these little diapers. However, when they left the house, the female (Fluffy), would rip them off. Maybe yours wouldn't. They come in disposable or reusable (and you just change the pads inside). She ended up just having the diapers on while she was at home, and when she left the house, she had to separate them into different rooms. About having a 3.5lb. baby to breed, she probably will get bigger, I think, since she's only 8 months old. It's good of you to wait though. My neighbor finally ended up breeding her pups, and they give birth to a VERY TINY little boy. However, they weren't prepared that they CANNOT leave it alone at any point. Just be prepared...you can't work, etc. You have to be there every minute. There was an hour time period where there was no one at their house, and when she came back, the little baby had died. It was barely 48 hours old (the most critical time). The mother (Fluffy) had moved the baby from it's warm heating pad, and brought it to another location. It ended up freezing to death. Moral of the story: Just be prepared. Know what you need to do, and DO NOT LEAVE IT ALONE! I felt so sad for my neighbor. Not to mention the mother, she was very depressed for days afterwards. Good luck!! I would definitely try the diapers if I were you. Hopefully it helps. Have a great weekend! |

| Just wondering, how much does your little boy weigh? Usually the male is the smaller of the pair to help insure that the puppies will not be too large for the female to deliver. Please keep them separated

She doesn't have to get pregnant. Keep them separated at all times even if it means one of them has to go somewhere else for awhile.

| The first thing I did was go out and get the little diapers, it kind of looks like it will help with the mess and assist with keeping him out... she tried to take them off at first but now she doesn't seem to mind it much, but I think she just feels icky and once she starts to get some more energy she'll try to take them off. I am going to go get her spayed once this is over, to be honest one of the other reasons I never had her spayed was because of the cost of the surgery. I'm going to look around and see if I can get a more reasonable rate. |

Or a vet who accepts payments? Diapers are good but they are easily ripped off if they are determined.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | That is SUCH a great idea to get her spayed. I know it sounds exciting to have puppies, but it's really A LOT of work. Sleepless nights, etc. I'm just going off what I've heard. Never dealt with it personally. Anyway, when I was getting Lola spayed, I called a million different vets, because prices are incredible! The SPCA does it (about $80-$100), but I heard they don't do blood work, or take all the precautions that a vet would. Also, you want to make sure you go to someone who has a lot of experience with small dogs. I wish I lived in your area because I could recommend someone. But after calling around TONS of places, I found a great one and it wasn't as costly as the others. You are NOT irresponsible!! SO many people think the same thing you do when they get animals, and you are being incredibly responsible by realizing it's probably not the best idea. That is huge!! If you are able to, I would recommend neuturing the male as well. I heard that in order for males not to get "pent-up frustration", they need to breed at least 2x/year. Otherwise they can become very frustrated, anxious, aggressive, etc. First things first though, take care of your little girl. She's gonna be fine and your a great mother!! Don't beat yourself please!! You are completely doing the right thing!! Good luck! Keep us posted! Last edited by LolaLove; 02-07-2009 at 07:06 PM. Reason: added something |

| Well now that we were talking about it I did some online research and found some clinics that are considered "low cost" and one of them is one that I had heard of before, so I am going to call first thing Monday morning. Oh, and what is Care Credit? |

I volunteer for rescue and from everything that I have learned from rescue, the female is usually the larger of the pair. But I could be wrong so please do not take my opinion as being a breeding expert. I would suggest that you speak to your vet about your dilemma. I am sure he could answer your breeding questions further.
