| Probiotics - Yogurt vs. Pill Hey everyone! Maggie developed a yeast infection after her last round of antibiotics.. thus she is on them again except this time, I know better! We are giving her a tablespoon of non-fat, plain yogurt with the pill. For one, it's a good way for her to take her pills and two, she needs the probiotics so she doesn't get another infection. I've been wanting to put the dogs on a daily regimen of probiotics but I'm having a hard time picking one. When it comes to the pill/powder pre-packaged form, I have two or three saved that were recommended by other YT members.. but I'm wondering if it would be okay to just give them yogurt? I just feel like it'd be more natural to give them yogurt but if it doesn't provide adequate amounts of live cultures or long-term use of dairy would be bad for them, I have no problem giving the pre-packaged form. I'm so terribly sorry if this has been discussed before - I tried searching but couldn't find a thread comparing the two; just discussions about yogurt and discussions about the pill/powder. Thanks in advance!

| I use Prozyme probiotic powder, I put 1/3 of a 1/4 teaspoon on their breakfast food (1/3 cup). The instructions call for 1/4 teaspoon for 1 cup of food. It is easy & I just mix it up in the food. The girls really benefit from it. I haven't given them yogurt, so I don't know about that.

| It is possible that yogurt is all some dogs need (in my opinion) because there are so many good reports about it. Howver, if you are really looking for them to get the benefits, I would suggest an actual prepackaged probiotic. We use Proviable by Nutramax.

| When I was having chronic sinus infections, my ENT told me that you would have to eat a lot of yogurt to get the benefits. Also, the "live" cultures in yogurt usually aren't strong enough to survive the digestive process and colonize in the intestines. Lady gets Animal Essentials Plant Enzymes and Probiotics. She needs digestive enzymes because she has pancreatic issues. Animal Essentials: Animal Essentials |

| Thank you all for your replies! Looks like we'll start looking into a prepackaged probiotic.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | For yeast, you truly need a therapeutic dose - and yogurt isn't concentrated to provide it. I use this one and am loving it. The real bonus is that it also contains digestive enzymes, which can be helpful overall, but esp. if there might be systemic issues going on.
