| Can possible liver shunt dogs have... their teeth cleaned by a vet while on anesthesia? The reason why I say possible LS dog is cuz the last blood test she got was normal (that was more than a yr ago, I think). Sorry I dont have the papers in front of me now. I want to get her teeth cleaned but its freaking me out cuz last time when she had to get her blood drawn, the vet had given her a shot cuz she wouldnt stay still and for the whole day she was vomiting and acting very lethargic. And I also heard that LS dogs shouldnt go under anesthesia, is that true?? I need to get her teeth cleaned but dont wana take a chance of losing her at all, pls HELPPP.... About her teeth: her gums are looking alil black at the lines and her teeth are alil yellow. I havent had any luck trying to brush her teeth, cuz she goes CRAZY. Omg, I have never seen a dog go that wild. Keep in mind I have 2 other yorkies as well and they are fine getting their teeth brushed. Maybe its the little dog syndrome??! Pls help me! Also she is not on any meds at this point and she is on a regular diet as well. I assume she is not sick at this point cuz shes off of her meds and back on regular diet that consist of Fish and Potatoes from Verus brand. Or am I wrong?? hmm... ANY input will greatly be appreciated!

| To answer your question, yes liver compromised dogs can have dentals under anesthesia as long as the correct kind of anesthesia is used. Diet and supplements depend on test results and symptoms. If there is a possible LS or MVD issue, I would support her liver. What drug did the vet give? Not all of them are okay for her. Ellie is extremely wiggly and her vet never drugs her for blood draws.

What is the correct type of anesthesia? How many types are there? Diet and supplements depend on test results and symptoms. If there is a possible LS or MVD issue, I would support her liver. She has no symtoms at all. Actually she never had any symptoms. They just asumed she might of been LS cuz she wasnt growing and she had a reation to vaccinations b4. What drug did the vet give? Not all of them are okay for her. Ellie is extremely wiggly and her vet never drugs her for blood draws.Unsure of the drug now. I will call them tom and ask the vet. So is ur Ellie a LS dog, if u dont mind me asking. If so, has she ever gotten her teeth cleaned under anesthesia and how is she now with her LS?

| Medical Treatment of Portosystemic Shunts Here is the anesthetic recommendation. Masking down and maintaining with Isoflurane is a good way to go. That is what Ellie's vet does. No NSAIDs should be given if liver function is in question. Ellie most likely doesn't have LS but may have MVD. She also had a vaccine reaction. She has some other health issues also, so it is hard to say how her liver is doing but it seems to be fine. Yes, she did have oral surgery before we knew that she had a liver functioning problem and she did fine. Then she was spayed, had a liver biopsy and a dental in the same day and did fine. Did you test bile acids?

OH, WHAT KIND OF REACTION DID SHE HAVE AFTER BEING VACCINATED? IS UR ELLIE ALL UPTO DATE ON VACCINATION NOW? MINE ISNT. I STOPPED GIVING HER VACCINATION AFTER THAT. DOES UR ELLIE HAVE HER RABIES DONE? Did you test bile acids? YES WE DID 3 BILE ACIDS DONE. THE 3RD ONE WAS THE NORMAL ONE. THATS WHEN SHE WAS ON THE VETRI DMG, FISH OIL, AND HEPPATO SUPP. ALSO SHE WAS ON VEGE FOOD FOR A WHILE AND ABOUT 7 MTHS AGO I SWITCHED HER TO FISH AND POTATOE FOOD. TO ME SHE SEEMS FINE. MAYBE I SHOULD JUST LEAVE HER ALONE AND NOT STIRR ANYTHING UP. IM AFRAID IF I GET ANYTHING DONE, I MIGHT STIRR SOMETHING UP!
| Ellie had DHLPP-C and rabies. She threw up, collapsed and went into shock. She was unresponsive to us. Yes, she still gets vaccines but not many and not often. We do titers and core vaccines only. She hasn't been due for her rabies since this happened. I don't know what we're going to do yet. In my opinion, it is extremely dangerous to let the teeth go. I would have them cleaned. The bacteria build up can lead to heart, kidney, liver and lung problems. However, if the vet gave any old drug to calm her down to draw blood, I think I'd be finding a new vet. Then again, some dogs are just really sensitive and anything the vet may give could cause a reaction, so I suppose it depends on what she gave. If it is asymptomtic MVD, you don't have to do a different diet and supplements if you don't want to but if her growth was stunted and she had a vaccine reaction, you may want to support her liver. Symptomatic or asymptomatic, I am all for giving the liver support.

THE VET SAID THAT SHE WOULD NEED TO BE ALL UPTO DATE ON HER SHOTS AND BE ON HEARTWORM MED. THE VET SAID THE SHOT THEY GAVE HER WAS butorphanol and valium AT THE TIME WHEN SHE GOT HER BLOOD DRAWN LAST YR. IS THAT WHATS IN THE ANESTHESIA? I AM SO SCARED OF VETS. ALL THEY WANT TO DO IS GIVE VACCINATIONS AND OTHER DRUGS WHEN ITS NOT NEEDED. IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I DONT EVEN WANA TAKE HER IN ANYMORE BUT I DO WANT TO GET HER TEETH CLEANED. I THINK HER TEETH ARE THE WORST OUT OF MY OTHER DOGS. Symptomatic or asymptomatic, I am all for giving the liver support. THE FUNNY THING IS SHE GREW SO MUCH WITH IN ONE YR AND GAINED ALOT OF WEIGHT. SHE GETS SO FAT WHEN SHE EATS ALOT BUT WHEN I CONTROL HER FOOD ALIL THEN SHE GETS BACK DOWN. SHE MUST OF GROWN ABOUT 5-6 INCHES OR SO AND GAINED SEVERAL PDS IN LESS THEN A YR PERIOD. WITH MVD DO THEY GROW OR GAIN PDS AT ALL??
| Dogs with liver shunt or MVD don't necessarily have stunted growth but some do. Maybe she was just allergic to those drugs? For general anesthesia, they can put a mask on her to breathe in Isoflurane. Then when she is asleep they can intubate and hook her up to Iso. No injections have to be given but this is just one way of doing it. I would be finding a new vet unless she is willing to work with you on vaccines. I understand not all vets want to write waivers for the rabies vaccine but a liver compromised dogs shouldn't be getting every vaccine every year. The schedule will vary depending on the severity of the disease but the vet should at least be offering you titer testing or only vaccinating every three years. I promise, not all vets are just interested in giving vaccines. If that is how you feel about your vet, please find a new one.
