| Is it possible for puppies to be overweight? Kobi is 14 weeks and weighs 6.2 pounds. He eats Royal Canin Puppy kibble mixed with Wellness Puppy canned food 3 times a day. He only has treats once a week at his training class at Petco. When he saw the vet less than a month ago, he weighed 4.11 pounds. Is it normal to gain that much weight in such a short amount of time? The breeder said he would be approx. 6-8 pounds full grown. I would appreciate any input. Thanks! |

| At that age he is not overweight. It is very important to feed puppies often and unfortunately just because the breeder estimated his weight does not mean that is set in stone. He will most likely be a large yorkie, given his weight at that age. He's at a training class????? Are his puppy shots complete? I would be really nervous to expose him to other dogs without a complete course of vaccinations.

I agree. Please don't limit the food, until around 6-8 months, you will not effect the overall growth of the dog, by limiting the food, but you will severely limit the overall health. Also, remember they grow in spurts. We had to show a copy of the completed shot record at Petsmart before dogs were allowed in class, does Petco do this? An estimate for full grown weight is to triple the 8 week weight or double the 12 week weight.

No, his puppy shots are not complete. He is attending the puppy training class with one other dog who also does not have all her shots. They never asked me for his shot record. Oh no, now I'm worried...

| Honestly, I would free feed until 6-8 months of age. It's just better for them to develop fully. You won't need to worry about his weight until he's a little bit older. I don't know if you can get a refund on your Petco class but it's so, SO SO SO SO important to wait until he's had all of his puppy shots, especially if you're taking him to a highly-trafficked area such as Petco. They can get sick so easily..

Had I known it was important that he had all his puppy shots before he started his training class, I would not have signed up yet. I'm wondering why Petco never asked me about his vaccinations. I will go there tomorrow and ask for a refund.

| Don't worry about the feeding when they are young. They need the food to grow. When Pao was a pup, I used to feed him 4 times a day as per my vet's advice. He was 5lb at 12 weeks old so I knew he was going to be a bigger Yorkie. He is 10 lbs fully grown and he is healthy.

Oh my, it's clear your breeder hasn't done any research on the breed. I'm glad you listened to your vet, but even some vets don't understand the differences between all breeds. Many people recommend free feeding until 6-8 months. Some people do this for the entire life of the dog. Dogs generally will not overeat kibble. This is not true with other foods though.

| I took Piper to a Puppy class when she was 5 months old at our local Petco. I had to have a certificate from my vet saying that she had all her shots before she could attend.
