| Who is still Homecooking? Maybe I'm imagining things but it seems like there were so many YT members that used to homecook and don't anymore. It seems like you are all going to raw or don't believe you were balancing the diet or are going to companies like The Honest Kitchen, etc. So, what I would like to know is, are any of you still cooking (besides Marci and Yorkiedaze of course )??? For those who have stopped, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that but it seems to be getting a bit lonely in the homecooking world. lol

| I only home cook chicken and veggies adding these to his kibble twice a day. I know other's home cook everything and don't use kibble. I haven't gotten that brave yet. So afraid of not getting the balance of nutrition correct. I am sure your not alone Ellie. I always enjoy your threads and posts. Your very knowledgable and I have learned quite a bit from them. |

Well, I am one of the ones who recently stopped homecooking, so I am probably not the one you want to hear from here! lol I stopped for that exact reason, that I was afraid I was not giving Wookie the balance he needed. He has had issues with his urine pH being too alkaline and even had some struvite crystals form. I don't know for sure that my homecooking caused that because I was also feeding kibble in the mornings, but I found that a lot of the ingredients I put into his homecooked patties were high alkaline foods. So once I looked more and more into it, I felt I might be doing him more harm than good. I just am afraid to try and balance things on my own, so I switched to the rotation diet of kibble and pre-made raw patties. Last night was our first night doing raw and I have to admit, I missed cooking his little meals and knowing he had a warm dinner in his belly even though I know I was doing better for him!!

Balancing everything isn't something I worry too much about because I follow a recipe from a nutritionist. We started out by just cooking for Ellie and not knowing what we were doing...not a good idea. If I couldn't talk to a nutritionist or follow a recipe that I thought was accurate and wouldn't hurt her, she would be getting dog food too.

| ...well you know my story. Roxy gets home cooked and TJ gets raw He was eating home cooked, but the rest of his BATs were below normal and he was getting 'bratty' with home cooked, I was adding all sorts of toppers...so back to raw he went and now we have no issues. My Mom has 3 and she was home cooking, but they too were getting bratty, so she is a newbie raw giver too |

| Oh, yes. Nicole and Yorkieluv still dog it! Okay, I am feeling less alone now. I know there are newer YT members that do it but I thought there used to be a whole bunch of us that started right after the recalls. I can't remember names right now though.

| I would love to home cook but it really scares me. I don't know where I could talk to a nutritionist or anything like that. I'm sick of dog food though, it's like no matter what kind I get, how good it is, how much it costs NOTHING - there's always something about it that bothers Lilly. Soooo frustrating.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Ever since Izzy was diagnosed with pancreatitis we had to stop everything home cooked and The Honest Kitchen for now until her blood levels get back to normal. She has to be on a low protein, low fat diet with supplements.

| Well I have been cooking for mine for 3 years. they also have kibble available whenever they want it. I have always cooked lean turkey or chicken or salmon , sometimes a few chicken livers.. mixed with brown rice cooked in low sodium broth mixed with veggies like brocolli carrots sweet potatos and maybe a few peas.. They get it once a day and eat dry other then that. My vet seems to think it is just fine and both dogs are very healthy..So I have not seen any reason to do anything else. |

You can also go to balanceit.com and buy a recipe but I would not use the Balance It L that they tell you to use. They can give you a list of human vitamins and minerals that you can use in place of this and that's what I would do. I have never used this service but I'm sure it's fine. When in doubt, talk to a nutritionist.

| ETA: Nicole and Yorkieluv are still doing it, not dog it. I hate when I use the wrong word.

| Well, your not alone..I do homecooking for Pao as well..When the recall happened, I started doing homecooking because I was afraid but when I first started, I do not know much about homecooking. It takes time to learn. Then for a short period of time, I did do one meal kibble and one meal homecooking but we are back to homecooking for quite a while now. So far, his blood tests shows that Pao is doing great on homecooking so I don't see why I want to change it just yet and the most important thing is, he is eating because it is hard to get him to eat. Even now, there are lots of vege that he doesn't like but good thing he likes most of the meat sources accept for beef and some type of fish. There are people asking me to convert him to raw but I don't know...I am more comfortable with homecooking. As for nutrition balancing, I do feed variety and I do add calcium citrate, vitamin E, vitamin C, glucosamine, brewer's yeast, fish oil, very little milk powder....Sometimes I add alfalfa for trace minerals as well..I don't overdo anything so that there is no overdose of nutrients either. Once a week, I rotate the fish oil with ground flaxseed, raw sunflower and raw pumpkin seed. We'll see how his next blood test do and tweak his diet from there.
