| Glucosamine suppliment What is a good age to start giving a glucosamine suppliment? What is a good brand and where do you get it? Mine are 4 yrs old and I was wondering if they need this

| Do they have joint problems/luxating patella? If yes, they should be on one as soon as their diagnosed. If no, you don't need to give one at all unless you want to be extra cautious. My favorite is Cosequin capsules (sprinkle it on food....don't make them swallow) but there are good reports with Synovi G3 and maybe even Glycoflex. I think Ellie's Cosequin came from entirelypets.

| Well, these supplements are perfectly safe unless there is an allergic reaction (rare). If you want to, I don't see why you can't. Ellie's knees aren't terribly bad but she is on Cosequin anyway.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Crystal, is there a difference between the glucosamine supplements? Wouldn't 250 MG of glucosamine be the same no matter what form it's delivered? I understand that some comes in powder, pill, capsule, but wouldn't it all be the same? I mean could you use the kind meant for humans as long as the dosage was correct?

Yes that makes sense. Actually your advice was for me too. From what you are saying that would mean that there is a difference in human brands and how humans are able to use it, as well. I use it and it does seem like certain brands work better, but I wasn't sure of this.

| Ellie's dose was one capsule daily for six weeks and then one-half capsule daily or one whole capsule every other day after that. Not sure where I found that chart though. Maybe on KV Vet Supply's site or Entirelypet's site.

| Nancy, if you Google Cosequin research, the third site down with this address (http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/Products...ents/Cosequin_) would be a good read for you. The link isn't working right, so I think you'll have to search Google instead of clicking avoid.

| Wookie is on Glycoflex because his luxating patella has just started doing the thing where it catches. It really has seemed to help so far. I give him the Chicken Liver soft chews.

| I use Cosequin and really like it. (Plus, it makes their coats grow really fast!) One word of caution, something that I found out the hard way. Apparently dogs can have allergies to shellfish too, which is where glucosamine comes from. So if you know your dog has these types allergies, avoid it. And monitor them closely the first time you give it. |
