| Chicken Meal in dog food Just want to gather everyone's opinions. I did a lot of research in dog food and I know that anything-MEAL is not very good. Though dog food companies define meal, like chicken meal as just "ground up condense meat" but in reality, people have proven, due to lack of regulations, chicken meal often times contain features, bone fragments and just bad parts of the meats (sometimes rancid meat). So in my mind, that's a horrible ingredients to have. YET the second best food brand from my research contains chicken meal, and I actually may have to change food right now because my dog is not eating. What are your thoughts? Does anyone know anything else about chicken meal? |

| Chicken meal is supposed to be chicken with the water removed which is actually better than just chicken because they can count the water weight and put the chicken first on the ingredient list. Now that's what it is supposed to be but who knows what some companies are doing. You really have to trust the company to decide what to feed.

| Chicken meal is good! I would prefer a food that lists chicken, chicken meal and then whatever. The ingredient "chicken" is the same as chicken meal, only chicken meal has the water removed. The ingredients are listed as human ingredients are, so, if the food has chicken as the first ingredient, they are saying the food has the largest weight of chicken, compared to the other ingredients. However, this is decieving because that "chicken" contains all the water weight. Usually if the ingredients are "chicken, oatmeal, etc." it will actually have more oatmeal in it than chicken (when you take out the water). If the indgredients are "chicken, chicken meal, oatmeal" you know you are getting chicken as the main ingredient, which is what you want! Also, the chicken is ground up regardless, so even if it says chicken, you are still getting the bone, etc. Which is good for them. Stay away from by-products and animal digest, as well as different types of artifical preservative.

| To my knowledge chicken meal is a good thing and is considered another form of meat and is ok to be in the first three products listed on the package. It's chicken by-products that contain the excess of the poor chicken and that is WHAT SHOULD NOT be in a good dog food. |

| chicken meal Hi, don't know if this will help answer your question, but I was also looking for answers about chicken meal and there is a very good book out in it's 3rd reprint titled "Foods Pets Die For" and it goes into quite a bit of detail about what is in food for our animals. I am only a little way through it, but I think it might be something anyone who wants more information about what is inside the bag instead of just what's on the label. |

| Chicken meal is fine. By-products and by-product meal is what you should be cautious about. I suppose there's always a chance that a company could be lying about what is on their label, but there's no way to protect against that 100% except by home-cooking. All you can do otherwise is research the companies you're buying from and go with your gut. Which specific brand of food are you thinking of switching to? People could offer more solid feed back if they know that.

Named meat products in the meal form are exclusive of the water content whereas meat products NOT in the meal formare inclusive of water content, and therefore would be more accurately listed further down the ingredient list once the water content is removed. So basically, if the first ingredient is Chicken, and no other named meat products are listed, there is a very low meat content (cheap) and you'll see something like Corn Gluten Meal used as a protein source instead of meats. Meat by-products are what you'll want to avoid. Hope that helps. | |

| Chicken meal is good, although the cooking process can cook some of the nutrients out, but the protein is good. That is why I prefer to see chicken and chicken meal as the first couple ingredients (or whatever main meat the food uses). Most of your good foods have the meat meals as the top ingredients. |
