| Poop eater! Our 7 month old yorkie eats poop! We noticed it when we first got him and our breeder said it was because the mom's will do that when the puppies are little to keep their area clean. I thought he had stopped since there hasn't been any pooping in the house anymore. But recently I watched him when the puppies went outside. He watched our other yorkie puppy Cruiser (he's 91/2 months old) poop and then ran over and ate it! I yelled out the window at him but it was too late! Gross! And the last two mornings he's brought in a frozen turdcicle from outside. Obviously I got it away from him and flushed it, but yuck!!!! He's notdoing it all the time because there's still plenty of uneaten poop in the yard, but I don't want him to do it at all. I just watched an episode of the dog whisperer where a dog was eating poop and Cesar had him eat bananas instead. He said it was because he was in need of the potassium that he was doing it. I wonder if other people have had this issue and how you've dealt with it. Any suggestions? |

Thor's Human Donating Member | "Turdsicle" cracked me up. There are a number of reasons why dogs eat poop. Unfortunately, it's not always a vitamin deficiency. I think if you search for "eating poop", you will find dozens of threads on this topic. I'm a little surprised the breeder told you his mom was eating poop... my understanding is that mommy dogs only do this if the owner is not cleaning the litter regularly. I could be wrong though. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I had never heard the potassium theory before, and don't know if it's true or not. It sounds like he was also doing behavior modification and rewarding the dog for not eating the poop. Some experts believe that poop eating can be linked to a poor form of protein in the food that is hard for the dog to digest, and using something like pineapple or meat tenderizers, which both have an enzyme that predigests the protein helps the matter. The dog is able to digest the protein in the food, and so the poop has no undigested protein in it. Many people swear by pineapple and say one or two chunks of canned added to each meal works. It's interesting to note the pineapple also has a high amount of potassium, so maybe there is some connection, but the protein theory makes more sense to me.

| There are things you can buy to give them, potty mouth, deter, etc. plus a couple pieces of pineapple a day should help. I just use the canned or the kind in the plastic jar. Mine did it one time, and thank goodness that's all she did it. Now, both of my sons yorkies eat it too, he did the pineapple and potty mouth and it worked, until he ran out of both things |

| Sounds like pineapple is definitely worth a try! I wonder if I should also give pineapple to Cruiser though. I posted this summer that Cruiser has a liver shunt. Long story short, after meeting with a surgeon we decided not to do surgery (I don't want to discuss this- it is one of the reasons I have not been on here much - I was criticized for this decision) and the breeder took him back for 10 weeks. He gained a lot of weight while he was there. We took him back after he was retested and reconfirmed his liver shunt. However, he is doing very well on a special diet and medications. He is still thin compared to Chewie but not stick thin like he was and he has tons of energy and is not lethargic like he was. Anyway, I hate messing with his diet because what we are doing is working. Is there any reason you think we wouldn't want to give him pineapple? |

| Well since there are health concerns, how about try behavior modification first before trying diet supplements? So praise/treat him (with treats that you know work for his needs) like you saw on dog whisperer (I saw this episode too.) We have the same issue with our puppy and did behavior modification with his treats rather than a banana. Now when he poops he runs to us for a treat rather than trying to eat the poop. |

"Turdcicle!!! THAT is just too funny!! KiKi was a poop eater too!! and OMG...you would think she had a piece of steak!! She would get a piece of poo from her room (pee pad trained) and she would RUN as fast as she could with it to the living room..on her blanket and lay down to eat it! She thought it was the greatest thing in the world!!! EWWWWW!!! The kids would call her SH**HEAD and I would get mad at the kids for calling her that!! I am SOOOO glad she out grew that nasy habit!! Good luck!

YT Addict | dogs eat poop. Horse poop, dog poop, cat poop whatever they can scarf down before you catch them. One of my dogs Looooove to chew on the frozen poopsicles. Our 14y/o has always been a big fan of the stuff. When we lives out in B.C we'd always catch her eating horse droppings. The vet said not to worry about it too much as its good for her. |

| Good to hear that your vet thinks it's good for her! We have a highly reputable vet, and I told her our 12 weeker is eating poop and she said "oh that is not good." And I was surprised that she said that, because I had heard it won't hurt them, it's just gross. |

| I've read from some previous threads on here that pineapple seems to do the trick for most people. Luckily, Sasha has never been a poop eater (knock on wood) but if God forbid she ever did start, I would definitely try the pineapple. Good luck! |

| I thought I had it bad. When Scooby has accidents he will scoot the poop all over the house with his nose looking for a hiding place to hide it from daddy. Ony one time he hid it in daddy's shoe. That will teach daddy to lecture him with that tone of voice. What about that stuff you can add to their food? Is that stuff okay?
