Donating YT 14K Club Member | How old is she? Is she going into heat? I've never heard of a female actually licking it up...now I've seen studs do that, though.

| My mom's female maltese stayed with me for about 2 months a while back, she came into heat while she was here and I saw her lick her pee from her pee pad. Pretty yucky! |

| Does she does this all the time or is something that she started doing recently? Have you seen any blood on her urine? I think you should take her to the vet she might have an urine infection.Gucci used to lick hersefl when she was in heat, yukky i know. I used to washer everytime i caught her. | No, she doesn't have blood in her urine, and yes, she just recently started doing this (a week) and only when she goes on her puppy papers, but not when she goes outside. Go figure???!!! |

| gosh i wish i had advise for you but i don't. i have never heard of this before, but i have heard of them eating thier poop when their bellies aern't feeling well maybe it has some relation. maybe she is feeling dehydrated. you can try giving her pedialyte, it won't hurt her none, but i would also call your vet. to get a definiate answer.

| I found this too: Urine licking or drinking Q: Dear Dr. Mike, I am a recent subscriber to Vetinfo Digest after finding your website and all the terrific information it contains. I am currently enrolled in Registered Veterinary Technician school and love it! Your site has been an immense help with school. I have a question regarding the dog of a friend of mine. I searched your site but came up empty. She has a 9yr. old Yorkie who has been urinating on the pavement and then trying to drink it! The owner took the dog to the vet to have tests run and everything was negative. None of the doctors in the office seem to have any answers or suggestions. Do you? She takes very good care of the dog including brushing its teeth every week. The dog is scheduled for a dental next week. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. K Karma- There isn't much information that I can find on dogs that will urinate and then lick or drink the urine. The only references I can find to this suggest that it is a learned behavior in some dogs that are constantly penned when young (usually pet store dogs) and that it occurs in other situations in which excessive boredom is likely. Some people have associated this behavior with hormonal changes in unspayed female dogs but I don't know if there is really any data to support that association. The only treatment options that I have seen for this is to use amitriptyline (Elavil Rx) or clomipramine (Clomicalm Rx). I am not sure what the rational is behind using these medications, though. | Ginger started doing this too, and I thought it was quite odd. Ginger was a Pet Store dog and maybe that's why she does it. I noticed she does do it when she's bored and the other two are sleeping. |

| Is it possible she thinks she's not supposed to go in the house period. So when she goes on her pee pee pads she thinks that she's done something wrong. IF she thinks she's done something wrong she might be trying to hide the evidence. Our little guy wee weed on a chair once and tried to lick it up before we noticed.
