| Questions about Liver Shunt Ok - so as some of you may know my dh finallllly gave in last night and told me I could rescue Kricket if he's still available - on a few conditions of course. One of them is that I change his name??? But whatever, I can do that... Anyways I have some questions about liver shunt. The little guy has had surgery for this and the fostermom said that he's 100% healthy now. Are there any complications that can arise later on even with having had the surgery??? Anything I should know regarding this? I appreciate anyone that can help me. I need to make sure I'm prepared to handle anything that comes along with this littl guy.

| Yes, you should know a lot about LS if you do rescue him. Problems can occur down the road sometimes that aren't normally talked about. I think I had heard one of them is Yorkies having trouble regulating their blood sugar, but I could be wrong. If the pressure was too high when the shunt was being closed, secondary shunts can occur. The owner now may have seen these two things by now but there is no way to know for sure.

| I posted this on your other thread, but thought it might be helpful here too So glad you adopted him and are giving him a chance at a healthy and happy home. I am sure you already know, but in case not (and in case this is helpful to others) that he still needs to be on a restricted diet and supplements. Even though he had surgery to repair his shunt, it doesn't mean he is free and clear. He could shoot another shunt at some point in his life time, so that's why it is important to keep him on a special diet and supplements and have his bile acids tested often to keep an eye on his liver function. Not sure if you are familiar with the Yahoo Group for Liver Disease or not, but it is a great support group with lots of helpful information and lots of Liver Shunt Survivors. Here's the link: DogLiverDisease : Dog Liver Disease Best Wishes and Congrats on your new Baby - Thanks for Choosing to Rescue GREAT JOB MOMMY P.S. Yorkieluv is the BEST at helping and answering questions in regard to Liver Shunt Babies I am sure she would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have P.S.S. What food are you feeding him right now ??? Do you know what his last BAT was??? Last edited by TLC; 01-10-2009 at 10:57 AM. |

I was thinking about calling Susan Davis, Pet Nutrionist. She works with Dr. Gordon, a holistic vet in Califonia to discuss his issues. Has anyone had any dealings with her...
