Need a little help from the PROs

Ok, so I made this post a while back:

I'm just now getting around to making her appointments and all that. I just called her vet to make an appointment and the woman argued with me a little. I just simply asked her if they had the single vaccinations or the combos and she said the combos but the combo vaccination had other things in it that the dog needed to be protected against. I just pretty much ignored her and asked again how I could find out if they could order just the single distemper and parvo vaccinations. She said I'd have to call back in about 45 minutes and talk to the woman who orders things and she could tell me if they could order it like that or not. The woman I talked to on the phone said "I don't even think they make them like that". I said "yeah, they do".

See, I stopped using this vet when we moved back in February because they made me uncomfortable (aren't very friendly). I didn't want Lilly to be spayed by them. Now, we've moved back down here and I don't really want to drive the 30 minutes to her vet so I figured since I'd be with her I could protect her and she'd be fine going to the old vet again. However, if it's going to be like this, I'm going to say screw it and just go with the better one where we used to live. I'm probably confusing everyone.

It just irritates me so much how these vets are so in it for the money. Money isn't an issue though, I just want what's best for my Lillybug.

Did I go about this right? What should I do?

The woman I talked to on the phone didn't seem very knowledgeable on anything to do with vaccinations.

Your post did make sense except did you talk to the lady you were supposed to call back for? Is that the one that didn't know about vaccines?

If you think Lilly needs to have singles because you don't want all of them in the combo, then by all means insist on it. When Ellie's distemper titer was low, the vet said she thought they could get it in singles and did just that. She didn't debate with me for 10 minutes why I should use a combo.

If your other vet is someone you trust, I would most definately go back to them. You can protect Lilly if you are there with her at this place but your money is supporting them and sometimes there are emergencies after vaccines. Which vet would you rather see her then? In the back of the office without you... Please go to someone that you trust.

What do I do if they can't order the singles? Then I call our other vet and they say the same thing? This is one of the reasons I hate living in Kentucky.

Call Revival Pet and order the singles yourself if your vet won't do it. Then bring them to your vet to be administered. I know a lot of people who do that.

They just don't want to...

If their supplier doesn't offer them, there should be another vet in the area whose supplier does. It also depends on what singles you want. Some may not be available at all. I know distemper is for sure. There is also a new vaccine, DHP. So all core. Not sure on the company though. This would be good so that you don't have to continuously do injections.

Hm... I'm going to call back in a few and see what they say. It should be interesting. They're not a bad place by any means... they're always good with Lilly, it's just always in & out and done. When we used to go to them, I'd try to ask the vet questions whenever we'd go in the room and he'd always give short answers like I was burdening him. I just always hated going there and feeling like I was stupid when I'd ask questions about different things. I don't knowwww.

That wouldn't be my first choice then.
Of course they can't spend an hour with every patient but they should be willing to give good answers to questions and take some time.

I am never rushed if I have questions even if it puts the vet behind.
After getting this kind of service, I wouldn't want to tolerate anything less.

Why not simply order the vaccines yourself and administer them....yourself?
Rather than deal with all the hassle.

I give my dogs all of their vaccines, shy Rabies because a county tag is permitted to accompany it, of which I am not authorized to print.

Try Vaccines and see what you can find in the way of vaccines you want.

Btw, is there any reason you aren't wanting a combo shot? Just curious what your logic is behind being so selective.

I don't have enough guts to give her shots. I'd be a nervous wreck.

Yeah, I don't want her over vaccinated. I don't want her given things that she doesn't need that can affect her health. Have you seen any of the vids about over vaccinating?!

Shew! Ok, I'm back. I finally called back and talked to someone who sounded like they knew what they were talking about. They had the DHPP instead of the DHLPP so I went with that (from my other post that's what was recommended). It was 1 shot so I guess they had just the distemper and parvo in one. I didn't feel rushed, I was AMAZED. They had different women working at the reception desk, I didn't see ANY of the old ones so that's weird. They were always the ones that were kinda rude.

They have a few different vets there and my favorite was the one that handled Lilly. I used to rarely get him. He's always really nice and really helpful and the other vets that I used to get were always so rude and rushy. Not to mention, he's very attractive . ANYWAY, I asked him about Lilly's non-stop itchy skin and he gave me some Derm Caps. He said I'll never get rid of her itching but getting it under control is really helpful. I'm not sure if it's under control or not. I keep clothes on her so she doesn't bite/itch much but she does lick her paws quite a bit. I'm going to give these a go and if they don't help then I'm going to figure out what else we can do with a skin scraping. Novel much? I have a question though, will giving the Derm Caps affect me with giving her Brewer's Yeast with Garlic supplement? I don't want to give her those 2 things and it hurt her and I figured you all would know.

So, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be which is always great. It wasn't high either, I dropped $30 and got her shots, Comfortis pill AND the Derm Caps.

If never heard of any interactions between brewers yeast and garlic and omegas but I'd Google it to make sure. However, I would never give garlic pills.

These are the Brewer's Yeast with Garlic, so those aren't good to give? I always thought they were. Thanks for the help again girl!

While this is a subject full of controversy because reactions are dose dependent and small amounts mean no reaction (we hope), garlic is in the same family as onion. Onion can cause hemolytic anemia (horrible to deal with). This is true less so for garlic and it has also been blamed on asthmatic attacks and dermatitis. A large amount one time or small amounts over time are the big issue. One small treat with garlic a couple times a year I would guess wouldn't do any harm... I would try to avoid it altogether. It just isn't worth the risk.

Oh wow! I had no idea! I've always heard it was bad because I know it's considered an onion but I just always thought since they made them for dogs that it was alright. I guess that's what I get for thinking though! I'm going to stop giving them to her and just give her the Derm Caps & her Comfortis every month and be done with it and hope for the best!
