| Raw and The Honest Kitchen, anyone? Hey guys. I am thinking of switching the boys' food again... I started them on NV raw at the end of October, which they have done so well on. Ryder has gained some weight and his condition improved a ton, and Ranger lost the few ounces he needed to lose, and his coat looks better than ever. The problem is that he still has occasionaly GI upsets, and while we were at the vet's this afternoon, we had a talk about nutrition. He knows that I have been feeding raw, and hasn't said much about it till now. Well I had to take Ranger in this afternoon because he threw up a few times and it's always better safe than sorry. Anyway, he said he was really concerned about Ranger and the raw food because of his sensitive system. He urged me to microwave the food to 130 degrees to kill any pathological bacteria that may effect him. To me, that kills the point of feeding raw. Anyway, I came home and started researching, and came across the Honest Kitchen, which I have heard good things about. It seems like a win-win as the meat and eggs are dehydrated at a higher temp to kill that bacteria, but the rest of the ingredients remain raw. Does anyone feed this? If so, I am really confused about the feeding guidelines.. it says for "up to 10 lbs" feed 1/2 cup. Is that a half cup dry or rehydrated? What about for 3lbs? How much water to do use to hydrate it? How did you determine the amount to feed? Any other suggestions, tips, comments? I really appreciate it guys, thank you in advance!

| Since it's dehydrated, I thought I'd heard it is supposed to be a safer option for those who don't want the bacteria of raw. Then I had heard that dehydrated might not be a healthy way to go but never looked into it. I also thought someone on Itchmo asked NV about cooking the medallions for a minute and the answer was don't because the bone fragments can become problematic when cooked at all. I would definately double check with the company though because it is hearsay.

Do you know what the possible problems of the dehydrated food could be?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm, it really concerns me about the vomiting...I've been sitting here thinking about it. I know you're a poo inspector like me, how are his poos during these times? Does he vomit right after a meal or later? Was it w/ all flavors? Does his tummy make gurgly sounds ever? I think you did add a digestive enzyme, right (otherwise, you might think about it)? I'm trying to think of this tummy infection someone posted about a while back and can't recall now...I think some bloodwork confirmed some things, but I just can't recall the details. Did his bloodwork show anything odd? I did try HK for the boys - this was quite a while back. I got some samples and they liked it twice - so then I bought a $44 bucket of it...and they hated it after the next meal or two. I don't know why. It seems like such a good food. But maybe try to sample it for a GOOD two weeks before you buy one of those big buckets.

I think at this point the vet doesn't think it's the raw, but does have concerns with Ranger and his sensitive system on it. I am thinking the dehydrated raw may be a good compromise...

| How long did they eat it for? Which flavor? I guess I'd better try it before I buy it eh? Thanks!

NV makes freeze dried raw too, so I don't know if you want to go that route - much pricier than raw frozen. But, if they do happen to like the HK you might be in luck. I know there are members on here whose dogs love the HK, but there are also many who tried it, and their babies didn't. I think they do give free samples (I think). Poor Ranger! Do give him some hugs and kisses from us. I bet you're just beside yourself in wanting answers.

Gosh Ann, I just don't think I could afford to go the freeze dried route! I am going through 3lbs of medallions a week, which is about $80 per month. I know the freeze dried is much more expensive... I think I am going to call the company first thing next week and ask for some samples. I have heard that if you buy from them and your pet wont eat it, they will take it back. I am going to call the local store that carries it and find out if they would do the same. At this point I'm not too worried.. that sounds bad but this is pretty mild compared to what it has been, so that's good. I am, however, BESIDE myself that I have to leave them AGAIN this freakin' weekend. Who in the RIGHT MIND gets married two days after Christmas????????? Oh right, my sister-in-law.. that's a whole nother story.

If he does/has had sometimes issues from both ends (vomiting & stool issues), it could be ibs. That can resolve for some babies though. I think you're doing both that dig.enz. and a probio, so that may help but can take 3mths or so to really heal the intestine. There are other things that can help with IBS too, but who knows if that's his issue yet. Anyway, I hope things improve for the little fella.

Marcel and Wylie sound like Ryder and Ranger- I have the carefree little lover boy and the sensitive worry-wort. I hate this traveling crap, we usually don't go anywhere without them more than once a year so this year has been a fluke. I really don't think he has IBS, because he is more apt to throw up bile. I haven't had the big D problem since last spring, so I think (HOPE) we're over that! I am going to give that Honest Kitchen a try, and see how they like it. I think Ranger will like it because he does not care for his food too cold and prefers it more to room temp, which I have been doing anyway. It's actually more cost effective as well, and when we travel all over for my horse competitions, it would be easier to take. Thanks so much for all your help. I really really really appreciate it! We are on day 2 of the ulcer meds, so he'll go through the course of two weeks on it and hopefully if there is anything in there, they will heal up.

| Poor Ranger! I had no idea he had stomach ulcer issues. Is it related to his hernia as a puppy or completely unrelated? I hope he likes the new food. Poor thing. Harley has never shown any signs of stomach issues. He did throw up a little a couple days ago (when we all had the flu), but that's it. I hope Ranger he's feeling better soon.

| repeating my other posts .... HONEST KITCHEN My Yorkie (Monday) was diagnosed as anorexic. She was 4 lbs. 4 oz (5 years old at the time) and had pancreatitis and was hospitalized in April '08 and hydrated for 3 days. My vet insisted on some crappy Hill's z/d kibble which the dog totally ignored. Jodie (LuvMySissy) sent me THE HONEST KITCHEN and Monday ate it up so fast. Here we are now 8 months later and she weighs a healthy 6 lbs 2 oz. and looks great. THK is a raw dehydrated food, all you do is add water. See the video link below. We have never gone back to that vet, and life is good. Have a new vet and a healthier dog. We use FORCE because it is the one she prefers. I did try EMBARK and THRIVE but FORCE seems to be the flavor of choice, but each dog is different. I highly recommend THK. here is a company that I found that has the best prices ....Alpha Nutrition or try this site to get a sample size.
