Puppy Problems... My nine month old yorkie won't stop eating her own poop. I try to watch her and pick it up right away after she goes but sometimes I'm too late. Why does she do this? I also have a problem with her food, I've tried 3 different kinds.. one from my vet that she HATED, one from the pet food store that she wouldn't even eat, and now she's on Wellness puppy food but I've heard it's bad?? I give her anti-coprophagia tablets but they don't work. My vet suggests going back to their food but I know she doesn't like it.. what would you suggest?

This is very common. So, don't feel bad, it's nothing you're doing. Try giving the dog pineapple a couple times a day(a couple chunks), after about 3-4 days, it will start tasting nasty to your pup. My sons 2 yorkies(littermates) do that, and they did fine as long as they kept them on the pineapple.

It is true that some dogs just do it, though. Franklin still will every now and then. I've kind of just learned to accept it and not let him kiss me when he does.

I used to have a dog that would not eat his own poop, but he ALWAYS ate my other two dog's poop! It was awful - he wouldn't even give it time to hit the ground! I tried pineapple, deter, forbid, meat tenderizer, etc., and nothing - nothing worked. I really hope the pineapple works for you. I feel your pain - it drove me nuts! Best of luck! I agree that some dogs just do it - the very best thing to break the habit in my opinion is to pick up your dogs poop immediately after he goes. That will get him out of the habit. Again - good luck!!

Thanks! I never heard of pineapple, good tip. I tried deter and she actually likes the taste of them so I guess that's why she likes the taste before AND after I'll give it a try

They do like the taste of the deter, but, they like the taste of pineapple too, it's something in the things that make the poop not taste good. You can keep your puppy on the deter(think it takes awhile to get in to their systems) and also give pineapple

Isn't it true that dogs eat their own poop, because their diet does not have enough nutrition? Something like that? Anyways, I don't have the problem, so all I can say is good luck!

| I suspect Olivia may be doing this (haven't actually caught her though) so I've been researching it. From what I've read, what they eat is a big contributor - for example, I was feeding strictly raw and then decided to try feeding kibble for one of her two daily meals. Since substituting kibble, her poo has gotten stinkier and bigger, and my understanding is that it's because it is not being digested as thoroughly as the raw diet was. And the undigested food is what gets their attention and they eat it. Sooooo gross! So I'm going back to the raw diet, now I'll see if she has developed a habit that will continue or if she isn't interested in it anymore (hopefully the latter!)
