| Licking paws, scratching face, please help! I am wondering if someone can help with a couple of issues my little guy is having. About a month and a half ago, I noticed that he was licking his paws a lot. When I examined them, I noticed there is some gooey buildup at the base of the nail. Is this normal? At the same time, he started scratching his face a lot. Because of this, his hair has thinned out quite a bit around his nose, and the skin is a little scaly and irritated. I took him to the vet about a month ago. He thought maybe it was due to a change in his food. He was eating Canidae, but when they were out, I bought him Chicken Soup. He said we should switch him back to Canidae and see if that helps. After two weeks, I did not see improvement, so I took him back to the vet. He put him on Clavimox (antibiotic) for two weeks. That did not help either. What do you guys think? Are the two issues related? What can I do now? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Here a couple of pics....

| Aw, poor baby! I'm not sure what it could be but someone will surely help you out! Lilly licks at her paws a lot but they don't have anything on them.

| Looks like it's allergies, but I can't really help you out on the cause. However, that redness around his mouth looks a lot like my dog's allergy to certain foods he ate. |

| Some dogs can take up to 60 days to see improvement when switching foods. It could possibly be an allergy. Possibly to chicken? I'm pretty sure Canidae has chicken in it... was he itching before you switched to Chicken Soup? Or did he start when you bought that food? Did the vet say what that oozing was? Is it pus from really irritated skin?

| Thanks for the responses so far. The vet said if the Clavimox didn't work, then maybe it was allergies, so you might be right. I keep thinking it might be something else though, since he has eaten Canidae and Chicken Soup before and hasn't had any problems.

It doesn't really seem like pus that oozes. It is more gooey, like you have to scrape your nail on it to get it off. The vet said some builup is normal, but maybe he had a little more that normal. Does this sound right? Have you ever seen anything on their nails?

Which Canidae are you feeding? In Chicken Soup there's a lot he could be allergic to. There's 5 different protein sources (chicken, turkey, whitefish, salmon, duck) and grains. I'd say if you think it's an allergy go to a one protein source food, one that he's never been exposed to. I'd say Venison or Lamb. Or try to steer away from chicken as this is the one thing most dogs are allergic to. I work as a bather and I've cut, I think, way too many nails LOL. I've never seen something like that, I've never even seen any kind of buildup (unless it was dirt buildup). I'd say switch to a one protein food and see how it goes, it can take up to 60 days to see improvement. Good luck and I would suggest using the search option so that you could learn some more about allergies and see what kinds of things trigger it.

Thanks for your help.He will be three in Febuary. The Canidae he is eating is All Stages. I always put a few small pieces of cheddar cheese in his food, maybe I should cut this out and see if it helps? It's good to know that the buildup on the nails is not normal. Maybe it's caused by the constant licking?

| In doing some research, I came across this post on a pit bull forum.... "Yeast normally grows in the intestines of dogs. When the dog has a problem, often times allergies, it knocks the dog's immune system down which causes the yeast to grow out of control and starts appearing on the dog's body. Yeast on feet is usually noticed by a yellow waxy type build up where the nail starts and swollen and irritated skin. On other places on the body it looks like waxy, yellow crud. The skin under the yeasty patches is usually red, swollen and irritated. Yeast has a definate smell to it too." Do you guys think it might be a yeast problem? Have any of you had a similiar problem with your babies? Should he have a probiotic after the Clavimox? Once again, any input would be greatly appreciated!
