| Help! Okay....I have read numerous comments about the right food for our babies. I am so confused. LuLu is almost 9 months old and weighs 4 pounds. I want to make sure she is getting what she needs. How can I make the right decision? I have also seen yogurt mentioned in several comments. Is this regular adult yogurt? I hope I'm not sounding too ignorant...but I don't want to make any mistakes where my baby is concerned. HELP!!!!!

| What kind of food are you feeding her? How much are you feeding? If you want to give yogurt as a treat or as a supplement, that's great-just make sure it's all-natural and has NO artificial sweeteners (aspartame, splenda). I would try the unflavored kind-either plain or vanilla. I like Stoneyfield Farms organic yogurt or Dannon All Natural Vanilla for my two.

| Help I feel like such a BAD mommy. When I first got LuLu, I fed her "Puppy Chow." I didn't know it was soooooo bad. Now, I feel even worse.....I have been giving her canned dog food (Alpo). Now, I know I am going to get her on something better....I didn't realize there was so much to know about dog food. I pray my little one forgives me.

| Don't feel like a bad mommy-we all start somewhere! It's great that you are wanting to do research on dog food and find the best thing for your furbaby. Are there certain brands you are considering? We could probably help you decide if you could give us an idea of what you're thinking of. A great reference is Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble Look for a 4-5 star food on there-typically a 6 star food is too rich for yorkies and intended for larger breed working dogs.

| Thanks! Thanks Suzy. I really don't know what I'm looking for, but I will go to the site you suggested. Thanks so much for helping me.

| No worries. I think we've all been there. Ellie has eaten Iams, Science Diet and Pedigree canned. Now she eats homecooked but that's not for everyone. If the food you are feeding is AAFCO approved (and it is), then she has been getting all she needs. Now that you know there are better foods out there, you can give her better ingredients. Do you want kibble, canned, homecooked or raw?

| Suzy's right- we've all been there feeding food that we wish we knew was bad- but its ok- it's never too late to change foods Choose foods that have no bi products (Those are the parts of animals that are not fit for human conusmptions- diseased animals, heads... feet.. you get it ) no corn (usually an allergen) no wheat (also an allergen) and I would also stay away form anything with beet pulp (a controversial ingredient so i stay away from it all together). Look for food where protein is the #1 and #2 food- like chicken or venison or fish. I also like grain free food- I don' think dogs need it and it is just a filler. yogurt is great Layla gets vanilla fat free pro biotic yogurt twice a day- she loves it! |

| Just to clarify-grain free doesn't necessarily mean carb-free. Potatoes, fruit, peas, and beans all have carbohydrates in them but are great additions to your dog's meals or as treats. I feed my dogs both grains and carbs, but I'm selective about what grains they do get.

| Awww, don't feel like a bad mommy--you're not. You are trying to make the best decision for your little one, nothing bad about that. I posted this in an earlier thread, but the advice is the same.. First off, I would not recommend an immediate switch after you bring your little one home. (Switching food cold turkey can often cause digestive upset. ) Instead, switch gradually. As far as finding the 'best food possible', you will just have to try out different things and see what is the best match for YOUR little one. All dogs are different and what may work for one many not be the best for yours. Research brands now, gather info on pet nutrition and decide which brands you think would be worth a try. dogfoodanalysis.com is a great source for info regarding ingredients in commercial foods, but keep in mind it and the ratings system were written based solely on the opinion of the site editor(s), not long term professional research. You have already been given some great resources to help you out, but here are a few more that will compare brands, home cooking, supplementing and that will give you some pretty in depth info on nutrition. Dog Food Review Ratings The Dog Food Project - How does your Dog Food Brand compare? (I personally LOVE the second site...it examines some of the commonly preached inaccuracies regarding "taboo" ingredients.) Good luck! |

| don't beat yourself up! you are learning and doing what you can to make the right changes for your baby! Are you wanting to feed Kibble? Canned? Home Cooking? RAW diets.. ? Pre-Made RAW= Frozen, Freeze dried & Air dried options.. (Nature's Variety, Primal, Stella and Chewy's..) (The Honest Kitchen, (Ziwi Peak..) RAW feeding = BARF & Prey Model raw diets. we feed our girls: Ziwi Peak Air Dried & Canned. Nature's Variety Instinct Canned & Raw Medallions. we leave kibble out all day.. only for them to graze on, in case they get hungry! (but their main diet consists of what i mentioned above.) the kibble we feed is Nature's Variety & INNOVA/EVO small bites. (but there are are other premium kibbles, as well ) there are a lot of options.. but just do your research, ask questions, and feed what you think will be best for your baby and your lifestyle, etc.

| Thank You All! Thank you all so much! I do want to do what is best for LuLu. She is my pride and joy. I also have a 14 year old peek a poo and a 7 year old dachshund and it amazes me how LuLu has come into our home and just stolen all of our hearts. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my other furbabies too, but there's just something different about LuLu. I went to the pet store today and looked at the Wellness and ended up getting confused, so I decided to wait and get some advice from you all. It is hard for me to leave food out all day because of my doxie. She will not stop eating. I was leaning toward kibble (hard) simply because I had heard it was good for their teeth. Is that true? Do any of you use Wellness? If so, which one should I try for LuLu? She will be 9 months old December 13th. Again, thank you all so much for helping me.
