| Concerned about my dog eating cotton, frabric... My yorkie is about 1 and a half years old, me and my family love him to death so we don't want anything bad to happen to him. He has this habit of chewing things even when I tell him to drop it. Anyway, I generally take away his toys, blankets, whatever as soon as i see him terrorizing it. There has got to be some of this stuff in his system, what are some potential health problems? Occasionally he would throw up...or so I assume, its different colour than his poop. I'm guessing that would clean his system but I don't know. |

| I don't know how bad it is for them, but if eating weird things is a cause for concern then I should be freaking out too. Gracie loved to chew/eat wood when she was younger, still does just not as much. Yogi, sigh, Yogi will be the death of me. Bugs, worms, leaves, wood, rocks, dirt, paper, wee-wee pads, carpet, socks, his sister. He doesn't just put it in his mouth or chew on it, he chews and swallows. At first I'd see him chewing on something and would call him to me, he'd come and I'd take whatever away. Now he realizes he'll loose his tasty treat and smirks at me, turns and runs with all his super hero speed away, chewing all the time until he's swallowed it. Then he'll stop, turn around and wiggle his whole backside and come romping back towards me. With a look on his face that can only say, "That was fun Momma, lets find something else bad for me to eat and do it again." I guess all we can do is try really hard to keep most of the stuff up and away from them and hope they out grow it...if they live that long.

| I had problems with Tricksie eating fabrics, string, she would get the poops and vomit. The Vet gave me some flavored vaseline for dogs to clean her out. She did outgrow it.

| My sister-in-laws Maltese ate the stuffing out of her blanket . She was deathly sick, started not walking right, not eating and not drinking. She took her to the vets and bella had to have a surgery to get it out of her belly. Her emergency surgery cost around 1500,so it was quite expensive, and her condition was life threatning. I would take anything away with a fabric or cotton filling. Bella is doing really well now and she has stopped eating everything she can get her mouth on. Good luck,,these babies are quite a handful!! Lisa&Chloe

| Those kinds of things can cause obstructions and that is extremely dangerous. I would puppy proof the house and only give a short leash outside if he eats stuff out there too.

| Hi. I noticed that my Mindy started ripping and eating the cotton from her wee wee pad especially when I put her on time out when she misbehaves. I'm concerned about what that will do to her insides! I can't monitor her when I'm at work! |

| Tearing up paper and puppy pads seems to be fairly common for puppies; at least for Lucy. She doesn't eat the paper though (or not much of it anyway). But you do have to be concerned when they are eating fabric, carpet, things that can wind around their intestines and cause blockages as another poster said. They can end up very ill and needing surgery. Also be careful of electrical wire (yes, I found little teeth marks in mine) Yikes! There are dogs they call 'hoover dogs' because they have a compulsion to eat everything in sight and folks have to be really careful in monitoring them. However, almost every puppy I've ever had chewed on things that they shouldn't have. All mine (fingers crossed for Lucy yet) seemed to grow out of it for the most part.
