| Concerned about weight My Brooklyn is 4 months old and he is only 1.15 lbs. I've only had him a month. I feed him Natural Balance Potato and Duck canned and kibble mixed. He likes the canned over the dry but he's getting better at eating both and not just picking the canned food out. Should I be worried about his weight?

| Is there a reason he is on the Duck and Potato formula? Isn't that more for a dog with allergies? You might want to try Innova puppy food, dry and canned, or even mixing some home cooked food in with the dry food. |

| Did the vet say he is concerned over the pups weight? If he's been checked and checks out, he's probably fine. How big were the parents? The main thing is that he's gaining a little weight, getting plenty of water, and is healthy..If he's doing good on the food, I would leave him on it..they are pretty picky, and if their food gets changed a lot, it will make them pickier |

I'm also wondering about the reason for using that specific food.....it only has 21% protein and most puppy foods have closer to 28%. It also only has 10% fat and most puppy foods have more like 17% or so.....and fat is needed for brain growth in babies. I'd ask my vet about the food you are feeding and what he thinks about his weight/health. He is pretty tiny and probably always will be, so you'll have to be more concerned about his health than with a larger dog. Because he is so small and so young, you should probably be feeding him at the very least 3 meals a day and maybe more like 4 so that he doesn't get hypoglycemic...smaller pups tend to have a bigger problem with that, so make sure you have nutrical or honey on hand just in case!

| I put him on the the potato and duck because he would not eat the ultra premium kind at all. His father was 4lbs and his mom was 5lbs. His vet didn't have any concerns about my choice of food he said as long as he was eating then it was ok. His vet said for the most part he is quite healthy despite his small size but they did run an bile acid test to make sure that his liver is working properly

If he isn't gaining, I'd switch foods. Ten percent fat is all? That is not enough. Or is that the canned?

I think if the kibble really does only have 10% fat, that is dangerously low for a pup. The protein level is also very low for a pup.

| Homecooked. I think the Natural Balance line is okay but didn't realize it is that low in fat. Innova puppy or California Natural puppy would be okay to try. If you like canned food, maybe Evangers would have something. Wellness is an okay food but it seems to cause stool issues lately in some dogs. Maybe use a little bit of canned food and mix it with the regular Natural Balance? Would he eat that?

I'm guessing you don't have the results of the BAT back yet? (If you do, what were they?) The fact that he has "days when he doesn't feel like being bothered by people" (but otherwise is pretty active) could be a symptom of liver issues, or so I've heard, so even if his BAT comes back normal, get one more done when he's a little older just to be safe. At 4 mo. (I think that's what I read...my mind is going!) I would think he ought to be pretty active unless it's nap time! Hopefully that isn't a symptom, I just wanted to make you aware.

| No I havent gotten his BAT results back yet (hopefully tomorrow!) When I said that "sometimes he doesnt like to be bothered by people" I meant that sometimes he likes to go off by himself and nap and then he comes back when he's ready. i hope that doesnt point to any health issues. I know some dogs are like people, they like their quiet time and he does. To Ellie May, I mix in either the canned potato and duck or the sweet potato and venison with the potato and duck kibble and he loves it. Before when I was feeding him the ultra premium kind with the canned, he would only eat the canned and leave the kibble behind but now he gobbles it all up
