| what is the best heartworm medication for my furbaby? i am finally getting my little furbaby Aeropostale tommorrow and i have been reading up ALOT on EVERYTHING. i have done alot of research but i cant seem to find out what the best heartworm medication for hiim is. some places i have read say that certain brands can be fatal to certain types of dogs, but otheres say it is ok to use them. i was just wondering what brand everyone here trusts and how long have you all been using your brand? his life is my absolute main concern and i just want whats best for him. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks!

| What a great yorkie mom you're going to be! I can't really make a suggestion right now because we're transitioning to a new one, so I don't feel comfortable recommending it just yet. I do know one that is NOT supposed to be given to yorkies less than 3 lbs. I think, but I can't remember the name of it. If you trust your vet, listen to him/her explain your choices and make recommendations. That's really the best advice I can give you. Also, if you trust your breeder, listen to what he/she says as well. If your baby is already on one kind, I would probably stick with that kind unless there's a reason to change. Good luck!

| im not sure if he is on heartworm medication or not. i havent gotten him yet so i havent taken him to the vet either. i know he is 6 months old but im not quite sure of his weight. i am buying him from a girl that is in college and doesnt have time for him so idk how much she has done for him. i plan on asking her when we go to get him. she said that she has his shot records but he is behind on 2 rounds of shots, so i dont think she would even have him on heartworm medication. i plan on taking him to the vet shortly after we get him so that he can be completely checked out. but whether or not he is in great health, i know i still want him! i am already in love with him!

| I've got mine on sentinel, it's a once a month pill for heartworm and fleas. I don't have a tick problem here, and the sentinel doesn't cover ticks. You sound like you're going to be one fantastic yorkie momma |

| This thread help you: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...edication.html Ivermectin (Heartgard, Triheart and a couple other brands) shouldn't be given to Collies-type breeds because they hae a sensitivity to it. It can be argued that the dose in heartworm meds is so low that it won't hurt them but if I had a Collie, I'd use something else.

| None until vet checked Since you don't know if she has been previously treated, then it is important for the vet to TEST for heartworm FIRST before treating. I read that if doses are missed for 3 months, you should test before restarting too, because if a dog has heartworms and the preventions kill them off it can be fatal. Since heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, you can judge somewhat by where she lives or lived how much risk she is exposed to. See the vet first, be safe, and they will advise you. Beyond that I use Heartgard treat type that also covers some types of worms. But I don't believe I'd use the type that also covers fleas. Too much. Enjoy that new girl!

| My girls have always used Revolution. I like it because it is dosed based on a smaller weight range. I have 1 that is on the under 5 lbs. and 4 that are on the 5-10 lbs. range. It is a once a month topical on the back of the neck and covers the heartworm and the fleas. My girls have never had a problem with it and they have never had any fleas. Living in the south, we have to have year round coverage for everything. I always wait a week before bathing after treatment, but it isn't necessary for the Revolution. Many of the topicals say that you should bathe them for awhile after treatment. Be sure and have him tested before starting any kind of prevention to make sure he hasn't contacted the heartworms. I know you can't wait to get your new little guy home!! |

| There are no reports of Heartgard being more dangerous to Yorkies than any other breed that I know of. I have used it and would use it again if I needed to... Any dog still could have a sensitivity to it though.
