He is really small and his weight makes him look really chunky he has no waist line even when he's wet, am I overfeeding him? He eats 1/8 cup of Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy in the a.m He eats 1/8 cup of Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy in the afternoon and 1/4 cup of Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy in the evening NO SNACKS NO TREATS just water and dry food He also gets about 1/2 tsp - 3 tsp per day of Nutri Cal on different intervals so that his glucose levels stay normal He often acts hungry still if I attempt to restrict this amount Am I doing something wrong or is this his build? many have said maybe he is just built cobby and stout and his vet said he is chubby I just want to make sure I am doing right by him |

| He is 11 weeks old, I don't think I've ever given him 3 tsp lol I am just guesstimating on the high end but I have given abt 2 tsps before spread out over the day , which probably is a bit much .. however, It was his first week home and I was not up for having a hypoglycemic Yorkie on my hands. Otherwise he has gotten 3-4 drops on my fingertip, which I estimate to be abt 3/4 to 1 tsp daily. Do you think these portions are correct? Someone had pointed out you should feel their ribs at all times, but his are a bit padded lol, I just don't want to overfeed him as his bones are so fragile I'd be afraid if he were too heavy that could lead to other health problems. |

| Hi annamalyssa! Gucci is a little doll-baby! I work for Eukanuba (new to the forum). I checked our feeding guidelines and I think you're probably spot-on as far as the feeding amount for Gucci (since you're also using Nutri Cal). Also, you may find over the next few weeks that his appitite slows down just a little. As pups grow, their energy requirements decrease and so does their calorie needs. It's not unusual for an adult to eat less than when they were a pup. For example, a 10-pound, 10-WEEK-old puppy might need 2.25 cups of food. Compare to a 10-pound, 10-MONTH-old young adult who needs only 1 cup of the same food. It is, of course, harder to see such a dramatic difference when you're feeding such a little guy! If we can help you with any other nutritional questions, give us a call at 800-423-6036. |

| Do you have any other dogs? If not, have you thought about free feeding? Mine is 5 1/2 mos and although the vets scales said 2 lbs, I think it was off, as I weighed her and she's about 1 1/2 lbs. I put her food down about 4 times a day for her. Plus she grabs some of the eukanuba naturally wild in between that sits out for the other dogs. |

| Hi I do have other dogs but not in the house , there is only one other dog (HUBBA 100lber) that sleeps in the house but he is crated. Also GUCCI doesn't have free roam of the house yet, because he hasn't had all of his vaccinations and we have other dogs I don't want to risk him getting ill. What is free feeding exactly? if I left him with food all day he'd eat the entire bag lol he's a fatty... that is why I was concerned I was overfeeding him.. because IF I GIVE IT TO HIM .. HE WILL EAT IT lol |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I free feed all of mine and they do great. That way I know they are getting enough. none of my babies are over weight. I make sure to feed a premium health food so they are healthy and happy. |

| To free feed is to leave their kibble down 24/7, they should be able to get to their food/water whenever they want. You'd be surprised, mine have always been free fed, and never really sit and just eat, they will pick at their food a little bit all day..I wouldn't worry, if your other dogs have had their shots, about your little guy. I have always brought my new pups home when they haven't had all their shots(except the last one), and never worried..I wouldn't give free roam of the house, I don't even with mine, and they're housebroken, they have their areas that they're allowed in..would love to see pictures. My new one is 5 1/2 mos. and although the vets scale said 2 lbs. mine is reading 1 1/2 lbs. she's 8 1/2 inches long through..not sure how high she is, will have to measure that yet...also, how old is he? Once they're over 12 weeks, and they're eating well, they really don't need the nutrical. Last edited by phfgkl; 11-25-2008 at 03:36 PM. |
