Thor's Human Donating Member | Itchy & Scratchy Hi, everyone! I'm new to yorkie ownership. I adopted a two-year-old "teacup" yorkie from a coworker. She would bring him into work every day and he would be incredibly bored and run through the halls and randomly poop in people's offices, which got him in trouble. I volunteered to walk him a couple times a week to get his energy out, and eventually we agreed that he might be better off with me. Anyway, one thing I've noticed is that he scratches himself CONSTANTLY. He clearly does not have any parasites. I've known him for several years, so I know he has a regular scratching habit - in fact, I used to say he was more like a cat than a dog because of his standard scratching poses. Recently though, it seems like it's become his default behavior. If he's not sleeping or eating, he's scratching. Even on walks, he'll stop to scratch himself. Obviously I'm concerned if this is neurotic behavior, but I also noticed today that he's actually chaffed himself quite a bit in certain areas around his "armpits" and chest. I thought it was his harness, but he's got some light scabbing at the top of his breastbone, which one of the regular targets of his rear claws. Other than that, his skin seems healthy - no flaking or anything like that. I wash him once a week. Any thoughts? <scratch scratch> |

| What brand of food does he eat? How long has he been eating the same brand? Stop washing him once a week and go to maybe once a month. Use a mild unscented oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. |

| oh poor guy- how horrible. But how lucky to be with you what does he eat??? Try bathing him once a month if you can until this is under control. Use an oatmeal based shampoo- until you have things figured out- if he is having a particularily difficult day you can give him children's liquid dye free bendryl which will really take the edge off the itch. He should go to the vet also to make sure it isn't a yeast infection or staff infection. |
