Dog Dog sick on canidae?

My baby Peanut is 1 year old. Last weekend, we stayed overnight in a hotel and had some friends watch her. On Saturday, when we got her back, she was very ill. She had bright orange completely liquid diarrhea and vomiting. She improved within a couple days. Then, on Thursday she vomited again and had diarrhea. Friday she ate, but much later that evening she puked up her breakfast. Since then, she hasn't been able to keep much down and I have been giving her small amounts of water to keep her hydrated. She has vomited some of the water up, and when I did the rice and chicken bland food yesterday, she puked it up an hour later -- a very small amount was given.

I was on the phone with the vet all weekend, and he was monitoring her. I did give her some pepto which seemed to help. Also, she apparently ate a lot of grass on Friday too because she had grass and dandelion leaves in her diarrhea.

Jump to today, I took the day off work and have been doing some research online. I look and find out that her food, Canidae, has recently reformulated their foods and that there are other dogs ill from this. I bought her food on October 18, and I am sure now that it was the new formula. It outrages me that Canidae is being made in the same factory as Diamond products. How can they be sure it's quality controlled? I am just scared/worried and I wonder if the food is the reason. Any input???

I am looking into switching to Evangers and will talk to my vet today when I go in for our 11am appointment. My poor baby! She is SO hungry but whenever I feed her it comes right back up.

It could be the Canidae but did your friend give her anything fattening while she was there? With her not holding anything down for this long, I'd be very concerned about pancreatitis.

I am not sure exactly what my friend may have given. I know she may have had some treats... but she didn't eat any of her regular foods. What is pancreatitis and why should I be concerned?

Pancreatitis (Inflammation) in Dogs

If it was the Canidae and she has been off of it eating bland food, I would wonder why she isn't getting better...

Ok, thanks for the info. Yeah, it's a mystery. I feel terrible for her!

Love

My dogs used to eat Canidae. I switched to Life's Abundance. Once when I ran out I had to buy a bag of Canidae. None of my three girls would even eat it. The just looked at it like "mommy, you know that is not our food."
Later I read on line that many dogs were getting sick with it and that they had changed the ingredients. I hope your dog is better now and that you find out what the problem is with her.

Hoping your baby is better soon.
I tried switching Buddy over to Candaie last year but it gave him the
runs so I stuck with Natural Balance of which I am very thankful.

It does sound to me like pancreatitis, like Ellie May suggested.
The symthoms all seem to be there. I hope she's better real soon.

I would be worried that she got into some sort of human medicine at the friend's house. Maybe they are afraid to tell you. When our dalmation, Dottie, got into some human meds, she had the same symptoms. She did not survive. I don't mean to scare you, or make you angry at your friend, but you need to KNOW.

The healthiest and safest thing to do for your babies is to feed real food.

I doubt it's the Canidae. From what I have read the dogs with problems from Canidae get diarreah but it doesn't seem like its as sudden or severe of symptoms as you have described. I was using Canidae during the ingredient change and my dogs didn't react at all (unless I managed to get an old formula bag the last time I bought it and they never actually tried to new formula). Anyway, your little one sounds pretty sick. It's possible she may have gotten into something without your friends even realizing it. I would definitely be concerned with it lasting this long. I hope your vet can help.

Default update.

the vet was very helpful. they did a stool sample and a parvo test. the parvo test came back negative but coccidia showed up in her stool. the vet said this could be the cause of the vomit and diarrhea. she gave peanut an injection to stop the vomiting and sent her home with 2 weeks of albon pills for the parasite as well as cerenia to stop any vomiting for the next 4 days.

the vet was going to do an x-ray, but we decided to try to treat this first and then if symptoms don't improve to go back to see if she has any obstructions. $200 dollars later, i hope this is the only thing wrong! my poor baby!

Well, I hope that's all it it. It sounds like it is treatable.

I can't believe no one mentioned possible pesticides from eating the grass! I would ask your friends if they treat their grass with fertilizers or pesticides ASAP. I lost my cat that way because by the time we figured out what happened it was already too late for her. I was shocked and deeply saddened and the pesticides used were SUPPOSED to be pet safe!

Smile update

peanut had a really rough day. she was out of it all day yesterday after starting her albon. we fed her once an hour and gave water frequently. the best way i can describe her is a wilted flower. her ears were down and eyes half shut all day. this morning she is a little more perky, she took down her three pills with a little food, and some water. so far so good. my husband and i were praying all night last night for her to make it through the night, her breathing was really shallow and fast, and she was moaning with each breath. i am SO happy she made it to the morning and seems to be improving. her ears are up at the moment! she even did a head tilt when i talked sweetly to her... fingers crossed!

Awe!! Poor baby girl.

I will be praying that Peanut recovers completely from this.

Thanks for keeping us updated.
