| Switched to premium food and pooping even more!?!? Hey everyone, since I didn't get much of a response in the general forum, I'll repost my issue here. Before joining this site, I lurked for awhile. Thanks to the really good info I got here, I decided to slowly switch his food from Purina puppy chow (the breeder used this) to Wellness just for puppy. While Teddy really seems to like the Wellness kibble, he has been pooping a lot more. Was not expecting that. Seriously though, he's gone from 3 stools/day on puppy chow to 5-6 stools/day on Wellness. All have been firm, not runny or anything. It took about 3 weeks to switch over. Is he still adjusting to the new food or is there another issue I'm not thinking of? I thought once I switched him to a better quality food that he would poop less. Any thoughts? Teddy has a vet appt scheduled in 2 days for another set of shots so I'll ask then anyways. Thanks in advance!

YT 2000 Club Member | I have been told in the past by several different people that if your pet is pooping that much than its not getting enough nutrition from the food, however because you switched to a better food Im guessing that's not the case?? Could you try switching him to something else and see if the amount of poop changes? I know Im not much help, so sorry.

| This sometimes happens when you switch to a better food and their bodies get rid of the old and get used to the new but since it has been this long, I'd say that isn't the case here. I would swtich to something else.

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | I switched to Wellness Just for Puppy after having fed PurinaOne (of course that was before I knew anything about dog food ). Bella pooped A LOT on Wellness for quite awhile, but then she started going a little less. She eats California Natural Puppy now (I switched for other reasons), and now she only poops 2-3 times a day. Even after a period of time she was till pooping 4-5 times a day on Wellness, so maybe that just wasn't the food for her. I'm with Crystal....it may be time to think of changing to something else. |

| If you've read from my other thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...poop-more.html, my puppy also poops a lot (6 times a day). I switched to premium dog food Nature's variety Instinct from the low quality food the breeder gave her. I completed the transition in two weeks, but after 2months she is still pooping a lot. So I'm now changing her food to Natural Balance Potato and Duck small bites and we'll see what happens.

YT 3000 Club Member | I had chester on a premium food timberwolf and he done the same pooped and pooped. I put back on solid gold and maybe twice a day. What is the fiber content and maybe more fruits and stuff or just too rich for his system |

| My dogs are on Wellness for Puppies also and yes they do poop more and it has not died down any and they have been eating it for 3 months now. We just started adding in Chicken Soup for the Puppy Loves with their Wellness and that has given them a little variety and less poop. I won't completely take them off of Wellness but I will continue to add another food into theirs.

| What do you think of the "Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul"? How old is your puppy and how long have you fed this food?? I have been mixing it with Lily's food too?? |

| same happened to both of my yorkies, when they were on wellness they were super poopers. we switched them to evo and orijen and now its two small, hard poops a day. i think it has to do with the higher protein. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You're feeding a high carb diet and for some dogs, this is going to be stressful on their systems since they are carnivores. If you read about how dogs digest carbs, it is a lot of work on their systems to process a carb, especially complex carbs - so a high carb diet could cause a dog's system to almost be in a constant state of digestion, depending on the feeding schedule. I would suggest you try a higher protein kibble, like Orijen. It's definitely worth a try to see if carbs are the issue for your pup.
