dermodix mites!!!! Are Mitaban dips really the only solution. I feel like Im goint to kill her with these! She is only 6 mos. old. My Yorkie is the first dog I've ever owned and I'm so distressed about this. Can anyone help with immune suggestions or what else I can do besides Mitaban dips? My vet says it's the only way.

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Did the Vet do a skin scraping to determine if mites? Sometimes, it's very hard to determine. With Bella, it did not show up when we were trying to find the cause of her skin issues. Her Vet prescribed "Ivermectin" just to be sure. She was given a shot of this one time, without any improvements & mites did not seem to be Bella's problem. We are now trying a medication "Atopica" & there has definitely been improvement for her. I understand your worry. It's frustrating. She does seem awful young to be going through these dips @6months old.

Yes, the vet did a skin scraping to determine what she had. The vet said it is not a localized issue either, it's spread out. My vet seems to think the dips are the only thing that really works. If its an immune issue, I need to start looking for ways to boost her immune system too. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks so much

Hey smooth, Let me tell you the story of my Zoe, She had demodex mites too, and she was also 6 months old. She's all cured now, thank god, but i had a hard time with it. Fist of all, just after it was localized they figured it out. Which pissed me off. She was on treatment for about 3 months, on ivermectin oral. I used advocate on her, and a Collar (preventic) which contains amitraz, that is great to destroy those mites. You can check it out here The Use of Amitraz (Mitaban, Preventic Collars) in Dogs and i gave her a bath each week with dermocanis. I did all of this by my terms, the only thing the vet was giving her was ivermectin. But it's always better to ask the vet whan can you do. Now a days i use advocante, i'm always switching with advantix. Good luck

Aww, your poor little girl. Yes, these types of mites are due to immune issues...more specifically her inability to produce a certain antibody. (Actually highly believed/proven to be a hereditary condition, inherited from the dam.) Unfortunately, there is nothing that will permanently "fix" the problem or change her immune system's ability to produce the needed antibody. However, there are a range of treaments (many mentioned here) that will keep the condition manageable. You just have to be patient--easier said than done--until you and your vet find the one that best suits her and give it time to work.

Thanks everyone. I went to a new vet and besides putting her on ivermectin, she put her on a 10 day dose of amoxicillan to offset another skin condition she suspects. I'll talk to her about all the other suggestions, ie, the collar, and go from there.
