| Some signs of ear mites are your dog shaking his head or pawing at his ear. No, you cannot see them with the naked eye you need a microscope to do so. Poor little Bentley had earmites a few weeks ago but we didn't even know until we had gone to the vet for a checkup. I was devistated, like it was my fault. But the vet said that it is very common it little puppies simply because they have not built an immunity to them yet and to not be alarmed. But they are contagious. He said that it was good that they were caught early on so that it didn't cause a serious ear infection. He gave me ear drops to give to him once a day for ten days. So if you do suspect ear mites call your vet and have them check it out. its very simple to take care of. Good luck.

| He shook his head a bunch last night but not today. I looked inside and they were pretty dirty but not red or irritated, he came from the shelter so Im hoping its just dirt. I cleaned them with alcohol & qtips. They also smell bad. But he saw a vet a couple of weeks ago for neutering and teeth cleaning. I would hope they would have checked for mites but you never know. Also he is 5. Is that to old for mites?

| If your dog has ear mites, his ears will be full of brown, icky stuff. This is ear mite "poop". It sounds to me like he probably has ear mites but like a previous poster said, it's no big deal at all. Maggie had ear mites when we got her and it just took some drops once a week for about a month and they all went away! Even if it's not mites, I would have your dog checked out. If the ears smell bad, something is wrong. He could have an infection. Good luck!

| Like the others has said, you cant see them without a microscope. Signs are itching or shaking the head. Could be a yeast infection if the ear smalls bad. Have the Vet take a look.

| UGGG its brown and sticky. But I thought he also had to have redness or swelling. I found something at petco for mites and cleaning. Maybe I should try that. Ill have to get approval for another vet visit because he was just there.

| Honestly, I would go to the vet. I don't trust giving medication unless my vet has okayed it. Maybe you can call to see if this medication is okay?

| If he isn't a puppy, mites really aren't extremely likely. I would think a yeast infection first. Whatever it is, the vet can do a cytology and tell you. Over the counter meds are probably best avoided because what if he has a reaction to them? Then you have to go to the vet and they are responsible for fixing a problem from a medication that they never prescribed. And you may also be treating for something he doesn't have if you don't get him diagnosed.

The only thing I want to add is that Maggie had ear mites as a 3 year old so it definitely is a possibility..

Sorry, I hope you don't think I'm trying to be argumentative. I'm just confused as to why you seem to feel ear mites is an incorrect assumption.

I absolutely do NOT think that it is an incorrect assumption. The symptoms do seem to match and it could very well be ear mites. What I think happens too often though is what the author explains in the first paragraph of this article: Ear Mites FAQ - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! So many people see their dog shake its head and think ear mites when there are other things it could be. I have no idea what the problem is with this pup but I would recommend a cytology so nobody is guessing.
