| Grain-free food or not? Hi Fellow Yorkie parents, So I have a ten-month old yorkie boy and he was on a not so great food when I got him from the rescue. So I switched him to a grain free diet. Good idea or bad idea? He gets diarrhea once in a while, but I read that Yorkies are prone to diarrhea anyways. I talked to the vet and she was no help. She tried to sell me a dental diet formula.... So my question is... to feed yorkies a food with grains or not? I was told that grains are part of what causes Yorkie's teeth to rot. I am so confused! Thanks! Andrea |

| I've been feeding grain free for about a year now. Less poop, less smell to that poop, and not as much tummy upsets here If he's doing well on it, then it's right for him. I think just like people, they are all individuals and we just have to go with what works for them

| Sadie's allergic to many different grains, so I only feed her Natural Balance hypoallergenic food which contain only one protein and one carbohydrate - no grains at all. The ones I feed her are Duck and Potato, Venison and Sweet Potato, and Fish and Sweet Potato. No grains ever for her - and she's as healthy as a horse and just loves her food. Of course, I nuke her food for 8 seconds in the microwave before giving it to her. Yup - she's spoiled rotten!!!

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I recently switched Toby and Zoey to Merrick's Before Grain and they love it. The poop size is a bit smaller and I say a lot less. They do eat more of it mostly because they love it and the grains are fillers so they overall need more food. But as small as they are shoot it's not that much anyhow. I have to say the poo smell is poo smell..not as strong but still a bit stinky as it's waste...lol. Toby's is worse than Zoey's but I guess just like men and women there is a difference there too. Good luck. As for a vet saying that it's normal for a dog to have diahrreah...that is not true. Normally diahrreah is caused by stomach upset or might be something viral. My guys go firm every single time.

| It really comes down to what your feeding philosophy is. Dogs really don't eat grain in the wild but they also don't eat kibble, so you have to be comfortable with your choice. Natural Balance has grain free food. They use potato and sweet potato. Or are you feeding low carbs and very high protein? A dog who has never had teeth problems does not need a dental diet. Their teeth need to be brushed all the time though.

| Many people overlook the treats the feed their yorkies, just cuz the food is grain free doesnt mean much when you feed them treats with corn and wheat ingredients. one thing to checkout. |

| I just picked up Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison for the boys at PetCo. They have a nutritionist there & he said that it was very good for their size, breed & age. We started integrating it into their meals last night. The food seems to be really dense! The treats he recommended were Wellness, Wellbars with yogurt, apples & bananas. When I handed one to them they both sniffed it, grabbed it from me & took off. Happy babies are the best! |
