| Homecookers: What's your yorkie eating for dinner? I am bored with the recipes I use frequently for the furgirls, and I need to cook this weekend. I'm not sure if the last batch of food was "good" or not, but since both girls had the runs last weekend, and then with Emma's trip to the ER, I'm tossing it all out. I hate to waste the food but better to be safe. Tonight they are going to have to eat late, because I just started their dinner. They will be having salmon with zucchini and orzo. I laugh at myself because it sounds much fancier than what I'm having! So this is a new recipe for me at least. I know there are lots of recipes in the sticky, but I wanted to know your furkids' favorites so I could have a place to start. Thanks!

| I make up their main food which has 8 different things in it and freeze about every 5 to 6 weeks in qt. size zip bags. They get 1/4 cup of this twice a day. For more variety I will add 1/4 boiled egg, or steel cut oatmeal mixed with steamed broccoli, or goat cheese, or tuna and sweet potatoes. You can also buy a box of Morning Star veggie patty's and pop in a toaster then mix fish or another meat with it. It's a great "short-of-time" meal.

| homecooked Hi... Our yorkie has been eating our food for years. Not as our vet said table scraps. We started long ago when i smelled in the expensive bag of lamb and rice preserved with vitamin E...well it smelled rancid and made me think... also when i visited in Italy they had food for dogs in bags .. the older lady we visted was cooking for the dog it was pasta with sauce and u add the meat the dobermans were sitting like kings wiating for the food ..the aroma filled her kitchen.. anyway.. we cook for our selves and he gets too the ratio we use is: rice or pasta or lentils 1/3 veggies 1/3 lean beef, lean chicken, fish or lamb 1/3 he also gets a teaspoon of cottage cheese or fruit with yogurt for a snack daily I read an article from New Zealand where the dog was 29 years and he ate veggies & lentils and occassional meat ... |

| Some people don't give turkey because they are nervous about it causing pancreatitis or they think there are preservatives that affect dogs in it. It must be preserved with the same thing as other meats and white meat turkey (breast) is very lean. Ellie does fine with it. I would not give dark meat or any skin or fat whatsoever. By turkey breast I mean the frozen ones that weigh somewhere around 10 pounds....never lunch meat.

| Homecooked I READ THIS ABOUT THE TURKEY... Turkey itself is not a problem - in fact you'll find many dog foods with turkey in them. It's what part of the turkey you give them that can cause a problem (the same is true of any other meat). The reason dogs usually get sick is that people give them the fatty parts of the meat, causing pancreatitis. That's why I specifically said the trim off all of the fat. The lean parts will not make your dog sick unless you dog has an allergy to it... Also ... many dog foods have turkey in it... our rule is moderation ... another factor that made us change is the pup would be sick from the shots shaking and fever, not eating...hide under the couch... so we would made a nice chicken breast soup with a little pasta and some bok choy a dash of organic olive oil... we could get him to come out from under the couch and eat a bit... next day he would be okay..just like us when we are sick..nothing like a nice homemade soup.. why we think a food in a bag is nutritious and full of good things for our dogs ? i do not understand anymore... those companies are making a fortune on who knows what ? at least i know what my dog eats... could u imagine eating cereal everyday ever meal all of ur life ? animals in the wild also have variety... of FRESH FOOD... of course not Deep Fried Foods ... |
