| Black Dirt I've noticed that there's black dirt on my female puppy's private part. I tried lightly rubbing it off with moist cotton, but it doesn't work. What could it be and how can I get rid of it?

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | It sounds like flea dirt. You should check her over very carefully and treat. Also - it could be skin discoloration - my oldest has little dots and they're just part of her pigment - kind of like freckles |

| I thought so too. It could be flea dirt but I can't find any fleas on her. If it's flea dirt how can I remove it?

I just went thru a round with fleas for the 1st time - I only saw one flea and never saw any flea 'droppings' .....but man were my girls scratching Frontline Plus and treating your home will put the brakes on them - once you are flea free - you won't see flea dirt ps....give her a bath in DAWN dish detergent and when you rinse - watch the water very carefully - if she has them - you should see dead fleas in the rinse..that's where I saw the one flea on my Chanel -

| You can easily tell if it's flea dirt by wetting it. A Q-tip or cotton ball works well. If it turns red, it's flea dirt (digested blood). |

| How old is your puppy? When Snickers was a puppy, up till he was 5 months old he had black dirt like stuff around his privates. At first I thought is was flea dirt but if we had fleas our Boxer (who sometimes I swear is allergic to himself) would be covered in hives. At one of snickers puppy visit I asked the vet to check it out. She told me that is was just puppy acne, just like human babies get and that it should resolve on its own, and it did. Maybe, that is the case with your pup.

Dawn dish soap---fleas have a waxy coat, the dawn is a degreaser and will kill fleas instantly.....

So I have to look for dish soap with degreaser, is that what you're saying? Wouldn't it irritate their skin, the dish soap??

| you can use dawn, or joy dish soap mix it with water first then give your puppy a bath with it- the best way to test if your dog has flea dirt is if you can flea comb your dog, take the hair from the comb, and put it on a paper towel, then gently put some water on it- if you see a red color its the flea dirt from biting at your dog. do you have your dog on flea preventative!?

I am CONVINCED my dogs have fleas... my mom was adamant they don't have it.. but she isn't the one sleeping with them. I see them scratching every night, I feel so bad, I KNOW they have fleas. I did buy frontline the other day, but haven't applied it as we went for a vacation like the next day. They probably have ear mites too, but again, my mom just forbids me to call the vet as she thinks I have spent too much money on them.. nevermind that Lulu is her dog I have been cleaning their ears all I can, and applied the ear mites remedy from 8 in 1 - it has pyrethrin - I read up on it and I will see if it helps. It's just not easy to clean Mocha - she just won't let me groom her. I will call the vet if it doesn't go away in maybe 2 weeks. I did get them on Sergeant's flea preventative about 2 months ago.. that was the only brand that I could get my hands on at the time. I just bathed Lulu today.. and she has one or two flecks on her skin - reddish brown - definitely flea dirt. I will apply the frontline tomorrow to both of them. I noticed from the other thread that you're a vet tech.. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us Is there anything else I need to do??

is this "Sergeant's flea preventative " over the counter stuff, cuz if so, dont use that...i would stick with flea/tick preventative from your vet only..and if you have hartz products there dont get them!

| My puppy is almost 5 months old. I'm still not sure what the dirt is. If it would help, would you want me to post a picture of her privates?
