One Meal a Day? Katy Lou has started to only eat one meal a day of 1/4 cup of food. I am getting concerned if this is normal or a phase? She is 5 1/2 months old and is very energetic and healthy. She is a little over 5 pounds, is not skinny, and is very long in the body. She has a shiny silky coat. Is this normal for a puppy this age?

well dogs are like kids and go through stages. if she IS eating and drinking and is full of energy.. then i'd say she is fine... i can understand your concern tho. If it goes on for longer than a few weeks and she starts to loose weight (to the point where she is TOO skinny) you might want to go see your vet. what are you feeding her?

At 5 1/2 months she's teething...if you're feeding her hard food it may be too much on her mouth. Try mixing some water in her food to soften it up for her and see if that makes a difference. You might also try putting a tiny bit of soft food over the kibble once it's softened to get her to eat.

She is on Wellness kibble and I do put some of the Wellness canned puppy food on top. Sometimes she will only eat the canned though. I never gave a thought that she might be sensitive from teething. Duh! I did inform the vet today and she is due to be spayed in a week or so. The vet said when she is spayed they will check things out. She is growing well regardless. She goes almost nonstop from morn to night so I am concerned that she get enough nutrition. Thanks for the input.

If everything else is o.k. I bet she's just teething but it never hurts to have things checked if you're concerned. I would try softening her kibble before mixing the canned food with it to see if that helps her a little...it can't hurt. Good luck...I hope everything is o.k.

| I would say she is probably okay physically (teething sounds like a good explanation) but that it is not okay for a small puppy to only eat once a day. Hypoglycemia is still somewhat of a concern at 5 1/2 months, so can you try soaking the kibble or giving more canned?

1/4 cup food Last time I took Molly to the Vet she told me not to feed her more than a 1/4 cup a day . But maybe cause she is so little and only weighs under 4 lbs. She isn't going to be any bigger than that and is almost a yr. old now. Hope that helps but I guess they are all different just like us.

I have been doing all that has been suggested, in addition to giving her some Nutrical supplement before bedtime. Perhaps the Nutrical is filling her up too much. I'm sure she is okay and the vet has been alerted about it. I would want some blood work done on her regardless before she is spayed to make sure all is right.
