♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | Tearing question?? Bella is 5 mo. old, and has teared ever since we got her. The hair under her eyes and along her cheeks is almost always damp with tears (makes sort or a trail at an angle from her eye to the edge of her face). I wonder about the reason for the tearing (if there's anything wrong??), BUT I also don't like they way it makes her look! (I know that sounds vain, but she is SOOOOO adorable except for that.) Is this just a phase?? She is teething now, but I'm almost positive she was doing this before she started teething. I feed her Wellness Super 5 Puppy (before that she was on PurinaOne). One of the reasons I switched her to Wellness was because someone had said that when THEY switched their dog's tearing had all but stopped (in addition to wanting her to be on a better food of course). For awhile I thought maybe this is normal, but I see sooooo many Yorkie pics on here that look like sweet, dry little faces. What am I doing wrong, or what could I do differently that may help? (Oh yeah, I asked one of my vets about it a long time ago, so he checked and said that she doesn't have the little hairs at the corners of her eyes that cause some dogs to tear, but he didn't say anything else about it. I'm going to my favorite vet tomorrow because I think she may have acid reflux, so I'll ask him too, but I wanted to check with my fellow YT'ers and see what you all say.....I just want everyone else to think she's as adorable as I do! I'm sure they probably already do, but I don't want wet tears to detract from her beauty! ) |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Reese has teary eyes...they cleared up a great deal on Wellness, but not entirely. Some people swear giving distilled water helps. Mine get that because we have a bottle water service. I have three dogs...only Reese's eyes tear. His mom's eyes teared...at this point...I think his just may be genetic and I wash his face everyday.

| I know that someone on here uses Eye Envy on her Maltese whose absolutely beautiful and tearstain-free! I don't know if anybody here has had success with it on their Yorkies, but I ordered some myself and started using it last night. I've only put on one application, so I can't really say if it works or not yet. Here's their website Tear Stain Remover | The Safe and Effective solution for Cats and Dogs by Eye Envy

| I have 2 that tear and 3 that don't and they all eat the same and drink the same. My 2 tiny ones are the ones that keep wet faces. My vet said that the tear duct is just too tiny and doesn't drain properly. Since the little hole is so tiny, the natural tearing doesn't drain but runs off the bottom lid and the hair just wicks it away. There isn't anything they can do about it so i'm guessing it is genetic for mine. |

The tear duct thing is interesting. How big are the ones with the problem and how big are the ones without it? My two both have it and it's constant. The smaller 2 3/4 lb one's face gets so crusty along that path of the tears that you'd swear she had a stick stuck in her hair. The bigger one at 3 1/4 lb, hers runs all day as long as she's active. I was told by a groomer that they sweat from the bridge of their nose, maybe it is accurate because it always gets more severe when they are running around like crazy. I posted that before asking if anyone else heard it. But no one replied.

I think I'm going to try the distilled water thing....it's so cheap, it's worth a try! But, I think I'll probably need to to try Eye Cleanse....I've noticed that the lighter hair around her eyes/nose that gets the tears (she's still in the process of changing colors) is sort of pinkish, so I'm guessing she may have the red bacteria stuff. I've tried Angel's Eyes, but it's smells so awful to me!!! And, since she only eats dry food, I have to give her something extra/different to mix it in every day. I think the Eye Cleanse will work better for me.... As far as the acid reflux goes, the vet asked me about how she eats....which is that I free feed (I measure it out every day so I know how much she has eaten at the end of the day, but I leave it all day) because otherwise she wouldn't eat at all. Sometimes she eats in the morning, but more often than that, she chooses to only eat at night. He said that she'd probably grow out of the reflux, but that right now she's doing it because her stomach is empty so the acid builds up. Plus when she's excited and pants or plays hard and is "breathing a lot", she swallows air. When the air makes it's way out, a little acid from the stomach comes with it. He suggested, if possible, to make sure she eats tiny bits all day (even if it's tiny "treats") if she isn't eating voluntarily, so that she'll have something on her stomach. He said if we're unable to do that, or if she continues doing it even with the tiny bits all day, to give her 1/4 of a children's Pepcid complete daily or even 1/4 of a children's Tums or Maalox (but he thinks the Pepcid complete works the best). He also said not to use Pepto Bismol in small breed dogs (I can't remember why he said not to!!! But, he said it's ok in larger breeds, but it's not a good idea in smaller breeds.) AND he said that one of the acid reducers (I think he said Prilosec??) has caused some dogs to have diarrhea and vomiting. He also said that he just scoped a dog this week that had acid reflux (and had it for ~4 years now), along with lots of vomiting too, but that dog was fine as far as erosion (ulcers) goes. I talked to him about my acid reflux and said I was worried about the same implications in her, but he said that acid reflux in dogs is a much more elaborate process and doesn't cause problems for them in the same way as it does humans. Hope sharing that info helps! | |
