Default blue buffalo and chicken soup for the dog lovers soul

so i just went to the vet becasue my dog has been sick and lost weight. i asked my vet the best thing to add to her food or if i should change her food. i currently feed blue buffalo lamb and rice and chicken soup for the dog lovers soul dry food mixed together. she said this food was "junk" food. and that i should feed either royal canine, eukanuba or iams. i thought that was the crappy food. what do you all feed your yorkies and what is your opinion on them. i have vistied the food anlaysis site a lot and chose these two foods because they were ranked so well. so i figured i would consult with yorkie owners to see what works best for them.

oh your post made me laugh out loud..... lol.... your vet is out to lunch.. i'm so sorry... but he/she is just saying you should feed iams or eukanuba because they are paid to say that. both of those foods are PURE crap... no question about it... Blue Buffalo is now a GREAT food (they had issues a few years ago but seem to really have come around and i know many on here feed it with confidence). and so is Chicken Soup. I'd stay the course.

What do you mean by "sick". How big is your dog? how long have they been sick? how much weight has she lost?

You might consider a new vet if he/she suggested you switch to that food to cure the problem. Did they do any tests?

well emma is 10 months old and used to weigh alittle more than 5 1/2 lbs and was always a little underweight. now she weighs 5 pounds. on the 17th of this month i gave her her monthly heartworm interceptor and the next night she started having diareah with a lot of mucous. so i thought it just had to do with the meds. but now 6 days later she is still having diarreah with the mucous. my dogs never ever have this there stools are always very firm and regular so this is defintly abnormal. so far she is the only one with it my other yorkie rocko is fine. so we went to the vet today and they did the fecal test and they said that she has spirochete. i have another post about that in the sick yorkie section. they gave me metrondazole to give her for 6 days. so hopefully that works.

thanks for confirming with me what i thought all along. i have done lots of reserach to pick a good food that would agree with my babies and i knew i had it, but sometimes you just need a little reassurance. by the way what food do you feed?

Oh ok.. sorry i missed that other thread. Since she is on anti biotics it is CRUICIAL that she also eat pro-bioitic yogurt (like Activia). The antibioitcs are killing all the good bacteria and the bad bacteria and the yogurt will put the good bacteria back in- try 1/2 small container a day.

I home cook (which was going to be my suggestion if you weren't sure what was wrong with her belly- just boiled chicken breast and white rice- you can still do this if you want.. it will be easier on her tummy while she is sick) and when i need kibble i currently use Wellness but when this bag is done i will be changing to Natural Balance.

Just curious why you're changing off Wellness. I feed Wellness, so just wanted to make sure it was a personal preference and not something wrong... (I know Natural Balance is a really good food too.) Thanks in advance....I like to know sooner rather than later if there's something I don't know and should!!

You are feeding good foods, your vet needs a lesson in canine nutrition. I don't know why some vets endorse poor quality foods unless they are getting paid.

Embarassed Crazy!

I'm sorry, but your vet is a paid spokesperson! They get great funding from Iams and Eukanuba, believe me. My vet was actually honest enough to say that 'most' vets aren't even trained in pet nutrition, himself included. Some of the big natural pet food companies employ nutritionists that you can email with questions relating to individual dogs, I'd start there. The next step would be to find out if your area has any suppliers of natural foods. I live near Lexington, KY and there is the MOST wonderful store, Bluegrass Barkery. Clay, the owner, is so knowledgable about the varied foods he carries....he's a great resource.

I hope you find a food you're comfortable with, but please don't listen to your vet!

i'm changing for 2 reasons. 1) i know that Natural Balance is better- I like that you can track the bag you bought and see what testing it went through and 2) wellness is going "commercial" (big pet stores) and i'm a bit worried about the quality suffering.

Default Bluegrass Barkery

The barkery is on Clay Avenue, off of East Main Street. If you come into Lexington on Richmond Road from I75 you will find Clay Avenue one street down from Ashland Avenue. Clay is the owner, but his sister, mom and dad all work there and are so helpful. Feel free to pm me if you want any more info on the barkery! Have a great time in Lexington!!

Animal Smiley 036 hmm

I had the same problem! I took peanut to the vet because he was pooping blood with diahrreah for a couple days and he wasnt eating that good, and we took xrays and did blood work and the vet said that he has a lot of gas in his stomach and his lower intesties are inflamed so he put him on hills percreption diet id wet food for a week, he wouldnt let us feed him dry only wet. so then with the food he got better and better and his poops are normal, so then i told him i dont want to feed peanut wet food all the time because he likes his dry food so he said i have to take him off blue buffalo and put him on hills id dry and its a percreption food as well. So thats that i found a different food AVODERM and its for sensitve stomachs and he said i couldnt use it, i want to believe him that there is a reason why peanut has to have the id food but then again the doc sells the id food at his work so i dont know, my boyfriend LOVES the doc and says that he knows whats best for peanut and we have to do what he says. so for now he is on id food but i think when he is done i am going to go back and try to switch him back to something better! he loved blue buffalo but he didnt like the little black balls i would have to pick them out! i want to try avoderm its for sensitve stomachs and i searched and searched for a good food thats for sensitive stomachs at petsmart and thats the one that i found....

i thought avoderm looked good too. but then i read that there are avacodos as in ingredient in it and supposivly they are poisinous to dogs. it also says this on the dog food analysis site. i wonder though why would they put avacodos in dog food if they are not good for them? anyone tried this food yet?(avoderm)

Hey there -

Just my 2 cents here. Doesn't matter how much you love the vet. The vet doesn't LOVE YOU or YOUR BABIES. Not saying all vets are there for money, but think about this - if your dogs get sicker, they get more money. If your vet is saying Hill's is good food, dump him. Hill's is BAD food. That's all I'm going to say. There are so many good wet food out there, much better than Hill's. And I used to feed my dogs Hill's Science Diet, so enough said.

Avoderm is not much better than Hill's. Its main ingredient is WHEAT. Main ingredients for dog food should be MEAT.

Please, please change vets before something else happens to your baby. In any case, a second opinion is always good.

My Selah loves her blue buffalo too, but she will eat all around the life bits too! If I leave them long enough, she'll eventually eat them!
