Kelley, if you give your dog Innova for example, you don't have to give any addition or raw diet. If your dog eats dry food, this is the best and that's all he needs, never going to have a problem with stomach and digestion system,(but remember never change the food within one day, it should take at least one week) it has all vitamins, minerals and nutrition balanced for dog, you don't even have to give any additional vitamins. But if your dog eats human food , than you have to give additional vitamins like Brewers Yeast with omega 3 fatty acids, or 8 in 1 Premium Vitabites Mini Daily Multi-Vitamins and Minerals, or 8 in 1 Premium Skin and Coat Food Supplement, or other kind. So it's really the best if your dog eats dry food, especially high quality like Innova or Canidae or other high quality food.

I feed both of my dogs a raw diet and they don't get dog food AT ALL.

Animal Smiley 019 food switch

I just switched today because Jack has had problems fro the last 4 weeks with 2 boughts of diarrhea. Jack has had no problems with worms or anything that could be causing this when the vet checked the stool sample. Everytime I try taking him off the amoxicillian and binder the diarrhea comes right back so my vet told me to find a lamb and rice formula. He was trying to push the iam's and pro-plan but I really wanted him on something better. So finally i have Jack and Mandy on California Natural( I found this food at the natural health food store) I really hope this helps Ohh by the way they were on proplan and RC mixed and they both were itchy.

There are so many brands , so it is to the owners to choose .

I agree that its the owners choice, However, Jacks fecal sample is normal and i have tried medicines that the vet prescribed what do you do ?? Wouldn't you make sure its not the food and many of the commerical foods have corn and other fillers.
One may say well I had a dog and i fed it purina and it lived to a ripe old age of 18. But since I believe that it is important to research the best food for our pets. Especially if they are sick and the vet cant find the problem.

Because the way I look at it is "you are what you eat" and your dog cannot tell you that you maybe feeding him what he needs wouldn't you try to research and get the best food for them??? But you are right. It is up to the owner to decide what they are going to feed their pets.

here is a great website about dog food brands, and what ingredients to avoid.. This person has done a lot of research on types of dog foods, and i know her from another forum, so if you guys have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Also, if you'd like to compare any brand to Innova...

WOW! Thanks for the sites! I learned so much on that first site! WOW! Royal Canin only has Chicken meal listed before the 1st source of fat (Chicken meal, rice, brown rice, chicken fat). Which means that there isn't a whole lot of animal proteins in the food.

I think the Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul looks like it is one of the best. It has SEVERAL different animal proteins listed (before the first source of fat)...Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain brown rice, whole grain white rice, oatmeal, potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, chicken fat.

I've learned what doesn't make RC the best food is NOT the amount of protein or fat (it's 28% protein and 18% fat-recommended for the Yorkie is 28% protein and 8% fat-so I've read). It's the ingredients. There isn't too much protein in the food, it's the ingredients in the food.

Well, I've learned a lot. Thanks for all of the information!

I did my highschool co-op placement at one of my town's many vets offices and ive learned sooo much about animal health and diets which is good for me because after highschool i am applying to become a Vet technician and i will say this Royal Canine dog food is good and yes has very high quality!
