| Orijen vs Acana - pls help decide, ASAP Hello again doglovers I'm having a stressful week. I've decided to change my dog's diet (a yorkie and a shihtzu) but it's very hard to find good quality food here in my country. Only Orijen and Acana are available, but I'm very much undecided on which one to get. Orijen has very high protein. I'm also still undecided on the whole protein is bad or good thing. On the other hand, it is grain free. Some are saying Orijen is better suited to larger breeds. Others are saying high protein = kidney problems is a myth. Acana has food for smaller breed. Much easier on my pocket *blush* But it only gets 4 star ratings on dogfoodanalysis.com, while Orijen has 4. Although, if Orijen is not suited to smaller breeds anyways, that rating is moot imho. It does have brown rice as the 6th ingredient though, if you're into that kind of thing.. which I think I am *grimace* I am going to the petstore tomorrow (right now it's 11.02PM), so replies within the next 12 hours are kind of important. I would love some advice from other members here who has experience with either one of these brands. I would like to hear about its palatability, since I am going to feed it to my shihtzu who is a very VERY picky eater. Thank you beforehand! Pls reply asap, I appreciate any and all! Love and puppy kisses, Babz, Mocha & Lulu |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi Babz . I feed Natures Variety Raw Medallions - but when I did feed kibble - I was last feeding Orijen and just think it's wonderful. I've actually corresponded w/ the company's nutritionist and he's pretty incredible. Orijen's white paper on canine nutrition is also wonderful - I just think, personally, they really "get it" in terms of canine nutrition. High protein should be great unless there is a liver/pancreas/kidney disease. Some people have reported added thirst on higher protein kibble diets - I personally never noticed this. If you do notice this, you can either sprinkle water on the kibble, or add in some canned (which is good for them anyway). But honestly, dogs should consume the amount of water their bodies require for their needs. I personally believe that higher protein is more species appropriate, as is grain-free. Canines are carnivores, after all.

| Wylie's Mom, thanks for the reply. I'm just very concerned about my dogs right now. Mocha seems to have less and less energy, and more itching, so I think I MUST change the diet asap. I took a better look at the Acana, and it seems that they have the ones with the old recipe? Contains beet pulp. Pls advice. Why I am shying aways from Orijen is because they don't have smaller bags and it might just kill my bank account. I will buy it if it's the best for my dogs tho.. it's just the price that is making me cringe. |

| Orijen. grain free is the way to go and there is no proof showing anything negative about high protein. btw, i wish i had a store nearby that sold orijen...how i envy you. ps...the price is worth it because you feed less seeing as it is a high quality food rich in nutrients. And beat pulp is simply a filler, much like corn although im not sure if beat pulp is something that causes allergies like corn. I would go with orijen 6 fresh fish. My furkid was on it from the age of 14 weeks to present day, even as a puppy he did very very well on an adult food. This is my experience. Last edited by bschwarz86; 09-11-2008 at 10:14 PM. |

| I dont' know anything about Arcana but, I just switched my dog to Orijen and he loves it. I have him on the adult kind tho. Does their 6 fresh fish flavor smell like fish or just what the average kibble smell? Would he make his breath smell fishy? I've read a lot of post of people recommending the fish flavor but not the regular adult.

| bschwarz86, thank you very much! Yes, apparently there are stores quite nearby my house that sells both brands. I will ask again if they have the sampler bags. But I went on some local forums and found quite a lot of people feed their dogs Orijen despite the price *wide eyes* and all are willing to buy leftovers if Orijen is just not suited to my babies. So it's been a great day so far But you live in California? Surely in the land of conveniences some stores are willing to send to you? |

| HAHA, i hate this place. Yes I can get orijen from a store but i have to drive the 50 minutes to LA to get it. Id just rather sit here at my home and wait for petfooddirect to send it to me. They send me a new bag every 3 weeks automatically. |
