| Shots make them sore? -- I didn't know if this should go into the Health and Diet section or the Injured section, I don't think he is injured though. Our little Wrigley who is 3 months old went to the vet for the first time (with us, he of course went before) with us today. He got a shot, somewhere on his side (I think that is where) well he has been fine all day. He didn't even yelp when they gave him the shot, and he did good when I put some flea meds on him today, but then around 6 or so I took him out of his crate and he yelped. Now if you try to pick him up he yelps. Could his front legs/muscles be sore or is this a bad side affect? He is still being playful and stuff, he isn't completely himself but he is playing. So is he just sore or should I be worried? And if I shouldn't be worried yet, when should I be worried? I usually pick him up right behind his front legs (like his side where his ribs are) and that is when he is yelping all of the sudden. Soooo basically are they usually tender after a shot, or should I be worried? Last edited by Jacklynn; 09-03-2008 at 05:20 PM. |

| Spike has the same reaction when he gets his shots - (he gets a couple of different vaccines because we spend a lot of time in the dog park, and he also goes to the kennel from time to time). Anyway, he had a very similar reaction to the one you are describing. During and immediately after his shots he was fine, but later that day, when the injection site got sore, he starting yelping. My vet had warned me that this might happen, and he was fine within 24 hours. I would say it sounds like a normal reaction to his shots, but if he still seems to be in pain within 24 hours, then give your vet a call. Try and keep him quiet for the rest of the day - if he's a bit sore that shouldn't be too hard. I find that the biggest problem we have with our pets is that unlike humans, they don't seem to understand why they are in pain, which frightens them. If we got a vaccination, and our arm hurt for a day or so after, we wouldn't worry because we know what's causing the pain and that it will go away. Animals don't understand that, so they get frightened by pain. |

| I never had a problem with my female Tinks, but my male Tyke, yelps that way after each visit to the vet for a vaccination. He is always back to normal the next morning.

| Yes, It is common after vaccinations for a dog to be sore. Be careful with him , and he ought to be feeling better within A week.

| He still yelped this morning (I had to pick him up because I took him outside when I woke up for like 15 mins, and nothing, he didn't go at all, then literally I let him walk in the door, I was still outside and he peed so I picked him up.... that dog haha), so maybe late afternoon after he has rested some more I will call the vet to make sure he is fine. Does anyone know, if we have to take him back today to be checked out, do they charge ANOTHER check up visit fee? |

| Maggie just got her last shot and this time and the time before she yelp when you touched her in her spot. I did call the first time and they said it was probably the shot but if I wanted her seen to bring her in. I waited and she was fine the next day. She is still a little tender today but not as much as yesterday. Your little should be okay. But if it will make you feel better, bring him in.

| Not long after I posted this morning my husband realized he was shaking/twitching on the side he got the shot. So we called the 24 hour place and they said to wait until our vet opened and to call them. I was worried too because he didn't poop yesterday and wasn't eating very much. I started to get a little freaked out, so Matt was holding him and cuddling him and we decided to talk to her normal and act like he was okay. THE LITTLE BOOGER!! As soon as we started to act like he was fine, he suddenly became fine. He isn't even yelping any more. He was for sure playing off of our worried emotions. He is still tired and is sleeping now, but as soon as we started talking to him in a playful voice instead of a worried voice he perked right up. He was soaking it up for all it was worth. He realized we were being cautious with him and decided to play it up! Guess lesson learned I'm just thankful he is okay! Tired and resting and still a *little* sore, but he is fine, playing and everything. Oh and he eventually pooped this morning, I think it is just because he didn't eat much yesterday.
