Default Advantage Multi or K9 Advantage?

Alfie needs to start on something for Heartworms... the vet gave me a book that included an insert for Advantage (fleas, flea larvae), K9 Advantage (fleas, flea larvae, ticks, mosquitoes, and biting flies) and then Advantage Multi for dogs (Fleas, heartworms, round/hook/whipworms)...

So my question is... you don't do all three I am guessing but which do you give?? The Advantage Multi will be needed for Heartworms... which is important I am guessing... and the other thing that worries me is mosquitoes in my area...

Any ideas on what I should choose? The Vet was helpful but I felt overwhelmed.. there was just so much to take in at the time... and she kind of left all this up to me and I want to make the best choice for Alfie.

Sorry I always seem to have the weirdest questions...

Advantage Multi is just too new for me to like and I don't like over the shoulder heartworm preventatives. If you HAVE to have something for mosquitos or ticks, you could go with K9 Advantix but if you can get away with just treating for fleas, I'd go with regular Advantage (if you have to use anything at all). You can also use Frontline for just fleas and it may repel some ticks.

I like Interceptor, Sentinel and sometimes Heartgard for heartworms.

I am not so worried about ticks as Alfie is more of an indoor Yorkie and when we start bringing him out... there isnt much grass as we live in the city.. but the vet mentioned something (I can't remember what exactly...) but dogs being treated for something because of mosquito bites...

I take from your post... Heartworm I will need, but the Flea, tick, and mosquito is more optional and the least used, the better? Is that correct? If that is the case I think I would go with Advantage alone (less is better) and a heartworm preventative...

This is all so new to me... I want to make the best choice

Heartworm prevention is needed for most dogs because of mosquitoes and the possibility of getting heartworms which requires a treatment that's really tough on the dog, but using a flea/tick product is optional. If you don't have fleas/ticks in your area, I would not use flea products because they are full of chemicals. If you don't have to give it, I wouldn't.

I am going to use just a Heartworm prevention... I feel better about going with less chemical options.

Are there any specific kinds that are best for smaller breeds? or does it not matter really at all...?

Heartgard and Interceptor are the ones I've seen used most often. Sentinel is another one.

Yes, the less the better.
Some mosquitoes carry heartworm and they inject it into your dog when biting.
To kill heartworm larva in your dog after mosquitoes have injected it, you have to use a heartworm med. This is absolutely necessary for most dogs in most areas. To deter mosquitoes K9 Advantix is supposed to work but flea/tick preventatives are really overused in my opinion. Tick bites may be a concern in your area because of Lyme's Disease. I would look into that.

The Vet brought up Lyme disease and suggested we dont treat for that... only if we decide to vacation and bring Alfie along... that was it. So that is out for now...

These poor little ones.. I saw the most nasty picture with all those little worms that could be in your pet.. poor babies. I never knew about any of that stuff before.

We actually brought in a sample of his makings.. to be tested. She said it was fine, but to still watch for anything. She also had him lick up this cream colored stuff that should help with that as well.

We talked with Bella's vet about what she needed. He didn't recommend a multi treatment. He strongly recommended K9 Advantix over Frontline because it repelled more (a few extra types of ticks and mosquitos).

Bella is an inside dog, but takes frequent trips out. She doesn't got places I don't go (which includes tall grasses) but she does play in the grass. Also, when we visit family, she goes lots of places with ticks, fleas, and mosquitos. We actually started her on flea and tick because of trips home. The first trip home we visited my parent's house and their dog (an extremely lazy Anatole Shepherd) had an early flea infestation. We were concerned about her passing it to Bella and then Bella passing it to us and our apartment! So now, we just keep her on regular treatments.

I think whether or not you need the flea and tick depends on your situation and what the dog does outside. Well worth it for us, it may not be as necessary for you.

I use K-9 Advantix and Interceptor. We have to worry about fleas, ticks and mosquitos.
