I was just wondering if anyone has fed cottage cheese to there pups?...Someone suggested I feed Teddy some cottage cheese when he gets diarrhea....Is this something that is okay to do or not?...I have a call into my vet to see what he says but thought I would see what all you lovely ladies have to say.[/font]

My babies love cottage cheese...just be careful, most have a TON of sodium! But, the vet told me that dairy products are not best for diarrhea. She suggested boiled chicken and plain white rice.

Be sure it's just pumpkin...not the can of pumpkin pie filling. They should be sold in the same area of your grocery store, but don't get the can that says pumpkin pie filling.

My mom has always told me cottage cheese for the diarhea but my vet said she thought the opposite. I listened to my mom and it seemed to work. Many vet sites say cottage cheese.

I don't know the effect on diarrhea but most puppies love cottage cheese. I mixed a little of it in with Tiki's dry food in the beginning to help encourage her to eat, and she loved it. I'd go easy with it though.

Cottage cheese is one of the last things I'd give for stomach upset.
It is tolerable for most dogs but for stomach issues plain yogurt would be way better. If Elie is having stomach problems I give her mashed potato though.

I would not give cottage cheese for diarrhea. It's really just like giving a protein - plus it's such a "heavy" dairy for some dogs, and not something I'd give when having digestive issues at all. Yogurt is much lighter, has more carbs, is lighter on proteins - and has probiotics that can be helpful; I'd probably give that after the digestion has normalized.

For acute tummy issues, or poo issues - I always give a highly absorbable and appetizing carb (and add fiber, if necessary), such as canned, mashed potatoes. When a tummy is sick, I just don't believe in giving protein - I believe in settling the tummy first with carbs, getting energy in the system, and restoring the appetite.
