| New puppy owner - Need advice Hello everyone. Our family just purchased a yorkie about 2 weeks ago and we seem to be having some issue I hoped someone could help me with. Our baby (Brutus) has been to the vet twice. Once for a routine checkup and once because he has worms. He is on medication because of a parasite, and he had problems with his anal glands. My concern is: is it normal for a 7 week old yorkie to poop up to 8 times a day?? His stools are not solid, they appear to be loose. We feed him Purina Puppy Chow 3 times a day because that is what he was given prior to us taking him home. Could all this be from the worms and medicine or should I look at switching his food. I have never owned a dog so this is all very new to me. Thanks! |

| Puppy chow not a premium food. If I were you, I would put your pup on Natural Balance kibble with diced Natural Balance roll food in it. JMO I also warm (just slightly) in the microwave their food. Also, if the bowels are really loose, try a little pepto (1/8 tsp). And yes, pups poop a LOT. My boy are finally down to twice a day and they are a year and a half old. |

| Congrats on your new Yorkie! When you change his food, do it gradually over a period of a week or so. The first day, his food should be mostly the Puppy Chow with a small bit of the new food mixed in. The next day, gradually increase the new food. By the end of the week, he should be totally on his new food. The pepto bismol should help as well. |

| I use Science Diet - it may cost a little more - but I can say it is worth. However you want to introduce your dog slowly to the new food. When I brought Zeus home he was on anther brand I had never heard of so over a 7 day period I add both food together starting out useing a bigger percetage of the old food and end with hardly any of the old food. Zeus also had tape worm shrotyl after I brought him home and he got the runs from his meds the doctors said most would not but he did - you would have thought a diaper had exploded (haha). If his stool does not start to get harder I would check with vet, I think mine has a hot line just for me - I call if the dog just looks sad or doesn't play as much - what can I say it's mom in me.... | Welcome to YT. That's a lot going on for such a little pup!!! I agree with Millie about the pepto. I also feed my doggie (almost 6 mos) Natural Balance but I'm wondering if 7 weeks is too young for this food. Aren't most pups this age still nursing? My breeder had Chewy on a puppy mash (kind of like cream of wheat) for a while and then he was on Royal Canin because their kibble is so small. I remember Chewy pooing a lot when he came home, but I don't know if it was 8 times per day I would try to seek out some advice from Pat aka YorkieRose. She is always very knowledgeable and is usually the final word for most of us when it comes to yorkie advice. Good Luck. |

| Well that sounds like alot of pooping. I remember wehn my pups were smaller they did go more often though. Purina puppy chow is not a real good food. I would switch to a better quality food. I feed Royal Canin mini bites.

| Could be from the medicine or could be his age I think at this age they are still rather small and their stool not of very hard consistency yet. Not quite sure. |

did you change yourself. If the breeder didn't tell you what she was feeding and you a first time dog owner probably thought, I'll just buy some food, then that could very well be the problem since this dog is so young and the pup couldn't handle the change. You got some great advise on quality food but if it were me I'd call the breeder and see what she had the pup on and continue that until about 10 or 11 weeks and gradually add the new food. These are tiny little delicate tummies. Welcome to Yorkie Talk there is a ton of information here and most vets will let you call them if you have a question. If it's loose stools and shes not drinking water she could dehydrate very quickly. It would never hurt to call the vets office and get an opinion there also. Good Luck I also agree this pup was way too small to have been taken from it's mom - yorkies usually go a 12 wks. I'm sure everything will work out and if you have other questions be sure to ask - this is what the site is all about. she/he was feeding

| Wow did not notice the age, Tthat pup was taken from its mom at 5 weeks? Please tell me that was a typo. In most states it is illegal to remove any pup from its mom prior to 6 weeks of age, and most breeders will keep a pup a minimum of 8 weeks. I got my boys when they were 12 weeks old. My next yorkie will be a minimum of 4 months prior to me taking them home with me, just to be extra safe. I think (and this is just my opinion) that the longer they stay with mom, the easier the transition to being on their own is and I think that it helps with their training, they are older and more ready for the potty training. Again JMHO. Switch gradually to a premium food, if you read the ingredients on the puppy chow you will see that it is not a good grade for your pup. Good luck and let us know how he is doing. |

aYou can give the puppy some canned pumpkin( without spices)plain pumpkin, say 1 T on his food, this should help with looser stools. Do you leave the food down "free choice"(leave down all the time?) I have found it's easier to house train if they are fed 4 times a day, potty time would be about 5 to 10 minutes after eating.Small amounts of food, more frequent might be best for such a young puppy. I also agree a "better" food would be good, are you using the Puppy Chow with milk on it? Puppies do not need milk after they were weaned,NO cow's milk they can't digest it. Vanilla, low fat yogurt,1T is ok,as is non-fat cottage cheese 1 T. Do you remember the "parasite" was it Coccidiosis or Giardia maybe? IF you change the food, please do it gradual, over 5 to 7 days, mix the food you are using, with the new food,so there is not a sudden change( severe stomach upsets can happen with sudden, quick changes)after this time, the new food alone would be fine, for 5 to 7 days, mix it half and half of each. Everyone has a "chosen" brand of food, none of mine can have wheat, soy or corn so I feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.Good food may cost a bit more but in the end,you feed them less as their system "uses" the food rather than going through them and having the dog poo more, not using it.In the long run,ANY GOOD quality food is better than a lesser grade. Yorkies are a delight, enjoy your new little fur child. | |

| It could be the medicine. I do agree with some of the others on the brand of food. I would change it. Mine eat Royal Canin and only go twice a day. It's more expensive than most, but it's worth it. 8 times is very excesive.
