YorkieTalk Newbie! | Help me before my mom loses it!!! My baby Daisy has been having off and on diarrea problems for the last month. She will be fine for a few days and then have some very loose stools up to diarrea and is going 5-6 times a day. We got her in May and she was 10 months old. Fed her purina puppy chow then switched to purina little bites and had no problems for a month. For the las month without food change we have been having the stool problem. she is going in the house and my mom is a neat freak and is losing her mind. I have read all over this board and realize her food might be the problem. Everytime I think I have a new food picked out to try someone on this board says its bad. Canidae - Was good now switch formula in June and people having lots of problems. Wellness - Good but now going to Petco so stay away. Solid Gold - See Canidea Nutru - Was good now kills dogs. It is all very confusing. I have some Canidae samples I was going to try until I read all the problems folks have been having since June. For various reasons I want feed Daisy kibble. Can someone please reccomend a 2-3 good quality kibbles for sensitive stomach that do not have a bad rap. Thank you |

| IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) try to keep a food/poo diary. see if it might be IBS caused by anxiety or stress. (i had to do this with my pup). i kept it for 3months. I found that he cannot have any treats (even homemade) and that if I walk him at least 1-2 times a day, he doesn't have as many 'accidents.' if i know that i am going to be leaving him in the care of a friend, i make sure i have some anti-D pills on hand and give them to him starting the evening before. I also leave them out for the person just in case. (i find that even tho it says 2x a day, one is generally enough). we feed them Purina One Sensitive Stomachs (small bits). (lab and yorkie) i know it's not really expensive food compared to what some people spend, but it doesn't give them gas and the first ingredient isn't corn. also, it helps keep them from doing the eat each others food dominance game. |

| I use Evo small bites for three of mine The fourth is on a prescription diet because she has a porto-systemic shunt, and the Evo is too high in protein for her. All three of mine have done very well on Evo, but there are a lot of good foods out there. I would not recommend ever feeding something you can buy at a supermarket or a Walmart/Target/etc. Mass-market foods are less expensive because they contain substandard ingredients. It tends to even out because dogs don't eat as much of the food when it contains higher-quality ingredients. A 29 pound bag of Evo costs me $40 and lasts for about four months. Nobody goes broke feeding a Yorkie no matter what food they use. Whatever you switch them to, it will require patience. Samples are of little help because you need to gradually mix new food with the current food, even if it's not a good food. You're not going to see the full result for about two weeks--one week to gradually switch them to the new food, then another to have them strictly on that food. All that being said, I would strongly suggest that you have a vet look at her, and take a stool sample with you. Chronic diarrhea is something to be concerned about regardless what food you're using. Even cheap foods wouldn't typically cause that unless they have an ingredient she's sensitive to. (That's not beyond the realm of possibility.) Best wishes, Jade |

| Lola has the worst stomach. The only way she does not have diarrea is I now give a tablespoon of boiled chicken with her kibble (she only has 1/2 cup of kibble 2X a day--she is good size about 9lb with the chicken). When she has diarrea which happens as soon as she eats any thing other than her food (grass, new treats, etc) I give her only boiled chicken and rice for a few days until it clears up and then go back to the chicken and kibble. I use the new natural small bite kibble put out by science which has much better ingredients than the old science diet food. morrislaz |

I feed Natural Balance Ultra Premium Small Bites. She has eaten it for a long time with no problems. I also give her baked white, lean chicken breast with her food, although, it isn't mixed. I order my food over the net because I don't have any stores close and then I don't have to go chasing food and treats all over the country. The place I order from carries all brands: Pet Food Supplies Dog Cat Bird ... PetFoodDirect.com If you want to check the site just for info sometime, they list all of the ingredients at the bottom of the page where the item is listed. I wish you luck, but she's having diarrhea for a reason and it very well may be that food. I've never used it, but I wouldn't recommend it, either.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks Jade and Med. Daisy had a severe problem in early July after my grandmother, also a yorkie owner, kept her for a few days while I was on vacation. She ended up at vet overnight IV's tests, etc. Vet did nto find anything in tests. Gave her an antidirrea med for a week and she was find for a couple of weeks. I have just gone back to school for the first time since we got daisy and she has been nervous about that as she is left alone for a little longer than she had been. Still only about 4-5 hours a day as my mom only workls part time. I could be nerves I guess. I will have to try to ge tmy dad to get the EVO. The closest store is 30 miles from my house. We do have access to a petco, petsmart, wellness, and canidae dealer. |

| When I was in Rescue, I got a little girl in that was just a major mess. Seems her parents (who were old and the woman died and the husband got really ill, so he gave her and her sister up to Rescue) kept changing her food because of the same problelm. She got so rundown that she got sick and was put on medication which only made the problem worse. She was almost dead when I flew her out here with the Flying Paws. It took me 8 months to get her back to health and by that time I knew what she could and couldn't eat. She had the most sensitive digestive system I'd ever seen. She was then adopted to a wonderful retired couple in NJ. They flew out here to get her. I sent her the entire list on what she can eat, and stressed to never change a thing. Well you know how that goes. She didn't think this would hurt her, she didn't think that would hurt her and so on till the dog was really bad off. She took the list and the dog to the Vet. and the Vet. said she should have stuck to the list because it was excellent. The lady called me to let me know what she had done, and how right I was. Poor little dog. First off, take the dogs off of dog food if you want them well. If you love them you will take the time to start home cooking for them. If you need ideas in that department there are a lot of folks right here that would love to help.

| I agree with some of the others that anxiety could be contributing to it Quote:
I'd really suggest you talk to a vet before you do anything, at least make a phone call. I doubt your mom would be receptive to getting another dog when you're having so much trouble with that one, so your vet may have other suggestions. Also, Evo isn't the only high-quality food on the market. There isn't one specific food that will work best for all dogs. One thing you have to avoid is continually switching foods, because that in itself will cause what you're seeing. You may want to talk to the vet about putting her on some low-res food until you can get her stabilized. (You have to get low-res from a vet.) I keep a case of that on hand all the time in case one of them has a problem. You should also keep some unflavored Pedialyte around if you're having problems with diarrhea. That holds true if you own any mammal, not just dogs. Dogs/cats/ferrets/all animals get sick from time to time, just like human babies do, and the Pedialyte helps prevent dehydration if you have problems with vomiting or diarrhea. Best wishes, Jade | |

| Sensitive stomach... Baron had the same problem. The breeder had him on Purina puppy. He had diarrhea all the time. The vet said he had a sensitive stomach which alot of small breeds have. I set out to find what he did the best on. It was Royal Canin # 33 for puppies. No more upset stomach,Gas or diarrhea. It's available @ Super pets for $9.99 for a 3 pound bag. I hope this helps... | I think the Canidae issues were because they switched formulas and didn't give people a lot of notice, so going from one bag of Canidae to the next bag was like switching foods for some dogs without mixing the foods for a gradual transition and people had no idea. It's probably fine if you start off with a new bag and switch her slowly. You could also try Innova - that one is pretty popular and widely available. Can you just feed her plain chicken and rice for a few days? Also canned pumpkin (not pie filling, 100% pumpkin) is good. Just give her a tiny amount, like a tablespoon. I freeze it in ice cube trays because we don't use it all at once and then I have it for when I need it. Also, definitely call your vet because when Loki was sick like that as a puppy he had giardia. Then his tummy was a mess for a while even after that cleared up. It was actually the Canidae that stabilized him and now he can eat anything

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | On and off diarrhea for a month, sometimes up to 5-6 times a day is a very debilitated dog - so I'm glad you found YT! I think a vet needs to seem first off - and a stool sample should be done to clear him of any parasites. If you're firm on feeding kibble, then I'd recocommend Natures Variety Instinct. Wellness makes some good kibbles also.
