| Iams Has anyone here try Iams smart puppy, for small toy breeds? It looks just like royal canin#33, and it feels the same. Also, It smell the same, and the pup comes out without odor, and dry. I dont know if this is a new product. I was shopping on line on the petco website, and I saw a bag with a little yorkie puppy on the front. When I got it on the mail, I read the ingredients, and it has fish oil, and no preservatives. I just wonder if anyone has any input about this. My pupp did not even notice that I suitched |

| I have a friend who feeds iams and when she kept Lexi for me while I was on vacation last week, she told me Lexi gobbled it up. So I was going to try it. But I'm curious to find out what other people think about it also before I buy it.

| Aside from animal testing- their ingredients are not good- at all. Try a food like Wellness (which is now available at PetCo i believe) or Orijen or Solid Gold. |

| You can YouTube Iams and see animal testing videos that you will wish you hadn't. Other than that, it isn't a high quality food and has wheat and corn, both are high risk of being allergens. I use Merrick and there are tons of other great brands. I like to look for human grade so I don't have to worry as much about diseased animals or road kill being included. Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble is a great source to check also. This goes for Science Diet also- try to stay away from anything Hills.

| I did not know anything about the animal testing. I buy everything on line, because is easier for me to find what I want, plus I live in the boondocks. The Stores are too far. I do get trials before I buy any products. I looked it up and did some reseach. I did not come across that info. To be fare, I am going to do a reseach on every product I buy. |

| Yes, Iams had contracted a company to do their testing for them years ago--2002/2003, it was investigated and reported by PETA. The company they had a contract with actually conducted the testing, not Iams--did they have knowledge of it, who knows? Iams has since then corrected the problem on their end and donated loads of money to the prevention of animal cruelty. Many people choose not to support them because of their tainted past--their is no denying that the conditions that were uncovered were horrendous, to say the least. At least, people choose not to support the company in the way of buying their food...the company still pulls in business and support in many other ways though. Many are fooled into thinking that by boycotting their food they are sending the company a message on a large scale...not the case. As far as the food itself, I'm not fond of and of the Iams line, or Royal Canin. But that doesn't neccessarily mean that won't be the best match for YOUR dog. While dogfoodreview.com has lots of valuable info, it is only written based on the opinions of the site editors, not long term, professional research. Your search for information regarding a quality food should not stop and start there. Another site I would suggest trying is: Dog Food Review Ratings It will link you to several sites that examine commerically manufactured foods, home cooking, raw feeding and dietary supplements. Also, there is a sticky at the top of this section that has contact information for some of the more recommended products. (At least the YT recommended ones.) Many of the companies will send you free samples to try and coupons if you contact them and request them. Do trial and error tests with food to see what YOU feel is best for YOUR dog. You will know that you have found a good match from the results you see in your little one. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm not a fan of the Eukanuba/Iams line - both for their careless history of their cruelty in animal testing and for their careless marketing of what is really a poor quality food. All you really have to do is learn what ingredients make up a species appropriate diet for a canine - and it won't take you long to see that Iams is really not appropriate in any way. It's that simple, at the end of the day: 1) Learn about the canine/carnivore diet 2) Learn about ingredients 3) Research what ingredients are in which foods

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I agree with everyone..Iams is not good. I switched my babies over to Life's Abundance HealthyPetNet Premium Natural Healthy Dog Foods and simply love it. It has never been on a recall list and is made fresh and shipped to your door! No use of corn or wheat products and they never use artificial flavors or colors. I now sell it as well. Good luck in your new food search! I'm sure you will find the perfect one for your baby! |

Yes, I remember you posting this a time or 2 before. I guess it goes to show, once you are a party to disgusting and inhumane acts, it's a bit hard to live down. I'm glad you agree so strongly with Ann's post. I'm assuming that means you've re-evaluated your opinion of Hill's- good for you!

Once you are a "party to inhumane acts?" I'm assuming you mean Iams by that comment...? I certainly don't support unnecessary animal cruelty. Yes, I've posted it a time or two--it is, afterall, my opinion. Yes, I agree with Ann's post--it's important to consider the content of a dog's diet, not just feed them something because of the name on the bag. (At least that was what I was going for.) Not sure what you mean in regards to my opinion of Hill's though... Last edited by BamaFan121s; 08-12-2008 at 02:31 PM.

I was only assuming that since you agreed so enthusiastically with Ann's (very good) points, that you have changed you previous support of the company. I agree with you, Misti, 100%. I think unfortunately, too often, people fall prey to the advertising blitz of Iams and mistake a very well know name for a quality food. It is so very important to look past the name on the bag- excellent point.

I think more people should learn about ingredients that are in food and not just feed a food no questions asked just because it's a highly recognized name. From that point, I think it's up to the each of us to decide for ourselves what we feel is best for our dogs' individual needs--which will differ from dog to dog and opinion to opinion. Agreed. I think people sometimes hear the name Eukanuba/Iams and assume since it highly recognizable that it's the right choice to make without actually finding out if it is.
