| Vet requires Lepto before spaying? I've never heard of a vet requiring that the dog have a 2nd lepto before she gets spayed. My mother and I did the first shot of Lepto on our 2 puppies. They had a reaction to it that night, and we decided not to do the 2nd one. What are your thoughts?

| It wouldn't be unheard of for vets to insist that certain shots were given as many times as they think it is necessary before spay/neuter, but because lepto is a dangerous vaccine and you've already had a reaction problem, if they refuse, I'd find a new vet.

| Find a new vet. How old is that one? Is it an old vet or a new one intent on making $ ?

| I don't know who the owner is. But it's a community pet care place. They have a few different doctors there. I just called and cancelled my appt for Augie for monday. They didn't mention it to me when I set up the appointment. They said it's an optional vaccine, but if the dog needs surgery/anesethia (sp?) Lepto is required. I don't know. I think I'm going to take them to a different vet, especially for the spay/neuter. But they have 1 doctor there that is great. Too bad he doesn't get to set the rules.

| No, it's the rules of the facility. It's not a 1 doctor vet. I'm thinking of getting the surgery done at another vet (the one my last dog used to go to), and just go to this one for check-ups, boosters, etc.

Kacee has never been vaccinated for lepto. I didn't want to chance a reaction. Good luck to you.

We go to a doctor who doesn't own the facility and she doesn't make the rules. However, she has some authority to break them. So, have you talked directly to the Dr. you like about not doing lepto because it has caused a reaction? No good vet, in my opinion, is going to try to force a noncore vaccine on a dog that has already had a reaction. That is a lawsuit waiting to happen. If you have talked to the doctor you like though and they are insisting on it, then I would go somewhere else.

| No we haven't spoken to the doctor. I'll mention it to my mother, I'll speak with her in about an hour. We're both at work, but she's tied to a phone.

| Wow, that's ridiculous that your vet's office actually requires the lepto shot before they will do the surgery

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Lepto is NOT a core vaccine, why would they even require it? A reaction last time could mean worse this time - and a good vet would know that potential with the body's unpredictable reaction to an allergen. I would not get this vaccine, nor would I support a facility that uses tactics that are not for the benefit of their PATIENTS. I'm really sorry you're having to go through this, how awful.

| Thanks for the support, I'm mom's on lunch, so I'm going to call her now, and we'll decide what to do.

| Zoeybear had a reaction to lepto, so we are not giving it to Baby Chloe. My vet said it is not a common disease in our part of the country anyway.
