Default rabies vaccine?

Lucie has an appointment Friday for her 16 week shots, the list I have says that she should get the Duramune Max, 1 yr rabies, and deworm or heart worm prevention.

I was wondering if I should wait longer for the rabies, or if I should let them do it on Friday with the others.

No don't do it. I have been told by several breeders, vets, and also the people at my local animal care and control not to get a yorkies rabies shot at 4 months and definately not on the same day as other shots. I know of a few people who have lost their yorkies by doing this. In my county it is the law to have all dogs get a rabie shot by four months but when I took my yorkie in to get her microchip I was told that I should wait until she was at least 6 months and even still the vet would need to look at the teeth to see if she was ready for it. I do not have any links right now but if you do some research online like I did you can read this for yourself.

I would wait. I know it a not recommend that they get too many things at once. Talk to your vet and express your concerns, and see how long you can wait.

PM me for my personal experience, if you would like.

Rabies should never ever be given with any other vaccine and it is best to wait as long as possible to get it.

California law requires all puppies to get a rabies vaccine at four months (16 weeks) and you must follow the law:

http://www.theanimalcouncil.com/file...ION_121575.pdf

The other vaccines should always be given separately to lessen the risk of a reaction. Since they are not controlled by law, those are the ones you should push back for a couple of weeks.

Default Thanks everyone

Thanks! I had tried searching google for yorkie vaccinations, but all I kept finding was yorkies for sale!

I'll make sure to talk to the tech before they try sticking her with anything! Some of the techs at my vet rush through everything so quick they don't tell you whats going on.

Thats great! Hopefully my vet will do the same, it usually depends on which person you see that day, some have really bad attitudes, it makes me so mad.
How much does yours weigh? Lucie was 1lb 12oz at her last visit, I think she might be around 2lbs now, she seems like she has gotten a little bigger.

My Suzi is 5 1/2 months old. She just had her completion of vaccines on Monday. AND Rabies. Suzi slept for a while when we got home, and was FINE. But, she does weigh 7.5 lbs. I was very concerned about the shots too.
Since your Yorkie is so tiny, I would wait till at least 6 months old. Or , have the rabies shot given individualy. Do not let the vet pressure you to have them done all at once. I would be really worried with such a tiny Yorkie to have everything done together.
If you decide to just have one shot done, then pick the Rabies shot, because of the strict California laws.

California is strict on the laws, but I also read under the state website that you must have a written letter from a vet to delay the vaccination showing it would cause harm to your pup. I'll have to look up those websites again…my Evee passed after she recieved her rabies shot, so I did a lot of research and will only use a holistic vet or administer shots myself. (except for the rabies of course)

You may want to look on one of the other threads about vaccinations. Because they said there are two different types of rabies vaccinations. One is a single dose, the other is something else but it has preservatives and many think this is the one that usually gives the pups the problems. Also research on the net has shown that it is better to wait for the rabies shot in pups til they are a year old because the vaccination is contraindicated because it has no affect for most til they are a year old. Again it would be better to discuss your worries with your vet, but after all that happened to me I reaseached it along with my breeder and this is what we came up with.

That's so nice of your vet to really take care of your complaint.
