Stinky breath My 6 month old Yorkie's breath stinks so bad. I have some stuff that you put in the water bowl daily and it does not seem to help. What am I supposed to do about this? I have doggie toothpaste and a toothbrush but she wants nothing to do with brushing her teeth. How are we supposed to brush a puppys teeth that will not let you get even close to her mouth ? I just cant fugure out how to brush them. Can someone please help pleeeeeeease..... Thanks

Hmm.. I'm not sure what to tell you about the brushing as Bentley loves to have his brushed because the toothpaste is meat flavored (unfortunately the meat flavor doesn't give him good breath). You might try giving her a petite greenie as that is supposed to help clean their teeth and give them good breath. On a side note, have all of her baby teeth fallen out (or been pulled)? Bentley got really nasty breath at 6 months of age and when I looked in his mouth he had 2 sets of teeth, known as double teeth (his grown up teeth came in and his baby teeth hadn't fallen out). When this happens, food, etc. build up between the teeth and cause a very nasty odor. The vet pulled all of the baby teeth out when he was neutered and we hadn't had a bad breath problem since then. I just thought I would point it out so you can make sure that is not the problem.

You can try Greenies. They clean the teeth and freshen his breath a bit.

I think that Bentleys Mom hit the nail right on the head - this is what I thought of straight away! Gypsy Rose at about that age also developed bad breath (had the extra teeth out when she was spayed) and now 6 month old Gizzie Chavi seems to be going the same way!! As for brushing teeth when they won't let the toothbrush anywhere near the mouth, you have my sympathy ..!! Patience and more patience maybe ..... ?!! LOL

I love the "greenies", truly does help. Schatzie will be having some baby teeth pulled out this friday during a surgery. I give Schatzie her tooth brush with doggie paste on it while I brush her in the am. This gives her something to do (play with) while Im trying to make her pretty. Usually by the time Im done brushing her I can then handle her brush and manuver it in her mouth to clean the teeth. She has already sucked the paste off by this time but atleast she let's me do it. WHew!! She didn't like it in the beginning either, but once she learned it turned into a game then she thought, "yeah'... Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I will have to see if the vet needs to pull out her teeth. That is somthing I never thought of. What are greenies? Where can I get it? I would love to give it a try. I can try making brushing into a game but I think there is no turning this around. She will hide when she even sees the toothbrush. Thanks

Well I'm glad the picture helped! I must admit, I was determined to get a picture of him with his greenie, so I could post it in a thread about greenies, so this was perfect!! Brandi & Hercules
