| Parvo? Just a few questions about parvo. I just came across a couple of postings on my local Kijiji classifieds, with a dog owner who said her dog is currently at the animal hospital due to parvo, and her friend's dog has also been affected in another area of the city, and one dog has already died. Her post warns not to walk your dogs, but even hers have never left the yard and still got infected. She also says her dogs were vaccinated, but it could be another strain... Soooo my question is, how long does the vaccine last? Layla had all her shots when she was a puppy, including parvo, but will this give her lifelong immunity? I'm just a little worried about taking her to the dog park or for walks around the neighborhood now. I did a google search for parvo in my city and all that comes up are the two Kijiji posts by this same person.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | There was another thread sometime back about something similar. Parvo is extremely contagious, and sometimes towns have outbreaks of it. The dog doesn't need to go outside the yard to get it because birds can carry it. It also can be carried on shoes, and brought in the house. I was told that yearly shots are necessary, so taking your dogs to the vet yearly is a must. It's a terrible disease and expensive to treat, so call your vet or check your records to see if your dog has been immunized within the past year. Never expose your dog to a dog with the virus, dogs are still contagious 2 months after treatment, and the virus can live in the ground for 1 year and survive freezing temperatures. The only thing that kills it is bleach.

| Thank you so much! I will call the vet after work today and find out. I also need to make an appointment for a tooth extraction anyway. The two areas where the dogs got parvo were not near me, but like you said other animals can carry it and Layla is always around other dogs at the dog park too.

However, some people don't seem to care about this, and you know how dogs like to sniff poop.

| How long after getting parvo does a dog start showing symptoms? Is it immediate?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | No, it's not immediate, I think someone said there is a 3-5 day incubation period. Here's a couple of links: Veterinary Q & A: Parvovirus (a.k.a Parvo) Infection in Dogs and Parvovirus: Serious Diarrhea in Puppies & Dogs

| Thanks! You've been a huge help. I called the vet yesterday and asked when Layla was due for a parvo shot... turns out it's the end of this month and they were just going to call me! So she now has an appointment for her vaccination and tooth extraction next Wednesday, and I'm going to avoid taking her outside until then.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh good, it's great to have a vet that reminds you of the updates, the vacine works for a minimun of a year, so you don't need to worry, and hope all goes well with Layla's tooth extraction, she's a real cutie!
