| LEPTO??? Help needed! Please help me. I know it's been done before, but I am very confused. When I first got Lexi and brought her to the vet, I didn't even know about Lepto. Based on the information given by the vet tech. and the vet himself, I had them give the first Lepto. Then, I came home and read different posts about it here at YT. I have done many searches on the Internet, and can't find a whole lot about it. Many sites said it should be given. Some said it shouldn't in all cases, but a lot of it was outdated. How can I find out if Lepto is common in my area? And where can I find some good current information that I can share with my vet if I am pressured to get the next round? I want to make the best decision for Lexi, and feel confident in it. I need to bring Lexi back for her 16-week shots so I can bring her out and about, so I am anxious to go, but I want to have all the info. I need before I make my appt. BTW, Lexi threw up twice on the way home. I don't know if it's from the vaccine (the only one she got at that visit) or not. Thank you for any help you can give! |

| lepto I wouldn't do lepto..it can make them very sick. She was probably just car sick, doubt it was the vaccinations. don't let them do more than one shot at a time and don't let them do rabies until she's about 5 months old. Duncanmom |

| Lepto is a hard call. Maybe try calling the nearest vet school to you (I think it would be Cornell) and see how often they give it or if they recommend it (make sure they know it is a dog under 10 pounds). I would take Cornell's word over a local vet. Lepto shouldn't be given before 16 weeks because it can suppress the immune system. For every argument that the vet and tech gave you, ther are counter arguments because it is not a great vaccine in my opinion. Lepto is dangerous BUT the vaccine doesn't protect against every strain. Most dogs do just fine with it BUT Yorkie puppies have died from the vaccine. Throwing up could've been car sickness but there is no way to be sure and if she was throwing up from the lepto, the reaction could be worse this time. If you are going to give it she needs to be pre-medicated. Reactions are more likely to occur the second or third time the vaccine is given.

<sigh> The first (and only, so far) lepto she got was at 14 weeks. I am leaning towards not doing it, and my husband is supportive of that. (Although he gives me a hard time when I question our family doctor and look things up on the Internet first - he says I should trust his professional experience! LOL) I called the vet and spoke to the receptionist. She said it is totally up to me, so I'm glad they at least have that attitude. If the receptionist was pushing it, I'd probably be looking for a new vet... Calling Cornell is a good idea. Thanks! | |

| I wouldn't give Lepto. I know someone who's tiny yorkie had a horrible reaction to it and almost died. My vet doesn't give Lepto to any yorkies, due to them being more prone to negative reactions. She said it isn't even necessary, since it is more of a concern for hunting dogs. But that is just her opinion, she has a whole pamphlet on Lepto in her office (about who needs it and who doesn't). |

| Buddy had lepto, but won't again. Bella will not be getting it. The vet wants to do her rabies shot at 12 weeks but I think she is crazy so that is my next battle.
