| Stinky ears and scratching! Hi everyone, my 11 week old baby has been scratching her ears all the time, both ears. They also stink! I have bathed her just to see if it was somewhere else, and its definitely her ears. I took a soft paper towel and wet it and gently rubbed inside her ear. The towel was clean, and it didn't bother her. She still scratches and has stinky ears and its been going on for a day or so. I heard this could be either mites, or an ear infection. Could someone give me some advice? I'm bringing her to the Vet Monday morning first thing, just in case.

| I think you answered your own question...mites or infection, does the inside of her ears look red at all? If so, she most likely has an infection. Does she act like she feels well otherwise? If so, I'd bet it's ear mites. Either way, she does need to see a vet for medication, antibiotics or ear drops. Ear mites are common...and fairly easy to control, if she doesn't mind the drops in her ears. She's only 11 weeks old, how long have you had her? Did you have a vet check her when you brought her home? Did the vet look in her ears? I'm sure she'll be fine...rub her ears for her and give her an extra kiss from Winston and I!!!

| You should definitely bring her to the vet because it sounds like an infection and can only get worse if not treated. When I got Keoki he had yeast in his ears- it was a musty smell and he itched them alot- The vet treated him with drops but it is very important to take care of it so if I were you I would bring her in on Monday so it does not get any worse. Good luck!!!! I'm sure it will be fine |

| While you are at the vet's you may want to ask him for a recommendation of ear cleaning solution, and how to use it. I use it every time I give a bath to keep the ears clean and smelling great. The ear canal is L shaped and will build up wax if not cleaned. It's difficult to bathe and not get some water in the ear, putting the solution in will dry the ear and help keep the ph balance correct. If you do have ear mites (very likely) Mita-Clear is the most effective and best smelling product I have found. |

| Yeast Thanks everyone for their thoughts, I took Cookie to the vet and it turns out she had a horrible yeast infection. The Vet gave me some drops to put in her ears every day and showed me the best way to give them! He said it should get better within 10 days So I hope it does!

Senior Yorkie Talker | Ding Ding Ding ....sounds like we have a yeast infection! Hank just got over his. if yours isnt too bad you can use alcohol and vinigar on and off with ear wash and feed a couple of table spoons of yogurt for prevention. Hanks was gone within two to three days. Some ppl use Hydrogen peroxide too. But only use it if you dilute it 50/50 with water. It's too harsh alone. |

Prevention: 1. keeping them clean with an ear was or with alcohol (helps to dry them) 2. Keep them dry (alcohol and cleaning soution) If you use ear wash the best way i have found to do it is put a few drops in each ear canal and massage the inside base of the ear. Then let them shake their head and wipe out the residue. 3. I would invest in some ear powder and remove all the hair inside the ear canal. this keeps the hair from holding moisture. 4. Hank gets a couple of tablespoons of yogurt at luch. The bacteria cultures in the yogurt keeps the yeast at bay. hope this helps | |

| This was taken from Dog Health - Cat Health - Pet Health - Horse Health - Human Health | NZYMES.COM (PT). The cleared up a yeast infection that my westie had when we first got him. there are certain foods that you should avoid, here is what the website states: THESE LISTS REFERS TO SECONDARY FOODS PETS OFTEN RECEIVE BUT SHOULD BE AVOIDED. AVOID PET FOODS OR TREATS THAT CONTAIN: Meat-by-products, Poultry-by-products, sausage, bacon, corn beef, lunch meats, smoked turkey, Ham, sauces or gravies. AVOID THESE TREATS: Milk Bones, Bonz, Beggin Strips, Snausages, Jerky Treats, Greenies, rawhides, pig ears and others. Look closely at ingredients. AVOID THESE GRAINS; Enriched flour, wheat, wheat gluten, white rice*, rice flour*, corn meal, corn gluten, millet, prepackaged breads, cereals, cookies, crackers, pretzels and pasta. (*White rice is ok when balanced in a quality food with brown rice or ricebran) AVOID THESE WHOLE VEGETABLES: Corn, peas, carrots, potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, yams, etc. (amounts of these vegetables used in holistic pet foods are very small and will not be harmful). AVOID DAIRY PRODUCTS LIKE: Buttermilk, cheeses and Cottage cheese. AVOID ANYTHING SWEET: Sugar, sorbitol, caramel coloring, honey, molasses, maple syrup, corn syrup or Dextrose. AVOID PRODUCTS LIKE; Peanuts, and Vitamin or Mineral supplements made from yeast sources. They have a list of premium dog foods that they recommend you use to avoid yeast problems. I do not use the products anymore but keep an eye on what I am feeding. Good luck and hope you stay yeast free.

| Hi AnaClaire - Darwin has the same problem right now. We've been putting in mometamex drops for 4 days, but I'm not sure it's getting any better...I feel like when I put in the drops, after massaging, and he shakes his head, the ointment just comes right back out the ear and makes the inside of his ear all greasy and the hair around his ear gets all greasy also. And then this afternoon, I noticed a red blister type thing forming in one of the crevaces of his ears maybe from the ointment collecting in his ear folds and not allowing it to dry? I cleaned it up with qtips, but it's still red. The 1st day the vet put the medication in, and his ear smelled so much better that afternoon, but since I've been doing it for the past 3 days, his ear stink seems to have come back. What does this mean? Am I not doing it correctly? |

| ARG!! Poor cookie - I hope she feels better soon! How disappointing that the yeast infection didn't clear up after 10 days! Did you notice how the box said not to use past 7 days? I thought that was pretty odd... Darwin hasn't been scratching too badly, but he does shake his head quite a bit...more than normal. I hope Darwin doesn't have mites! The vet wanted to see us back in 10 days, so I guess I'll take him in again next Friday...stupid ear infection! Now I'm scared to death to bathe him, b/c I'm always going to fear water getting into his ears! Poor pups, it's so hard to see them suffering, and I feel even worse knowing I may have given him the ear infection by getting water down his ears. I'm also stressed outta my mind b/c I have to travel for business next week, and my friend is coming to stay at my apt to take care of Darwin, and I'm going to have to ask her to administer the mometamex for 2 days while I'm out of town, and if me and my bf are having problems doing it with 2 people, how the heck is she going to manage on her own?? |
