| I Love My Babies Donating Member | I talked to my vet about putting my 3 on Heart Worm Medications. She said not to. Heartworms are not a problem in this area. (South Western Idaho). If we would travel then we should come in and get something. What do you guys think?

| Living in Central Florida, Scooter has to be on heartworm medication, because we have mosquitoes the size of planes. However, I have had him on HeartGard and twice after taking it, within a couple of hours, he started throwing up and continued to throw up for quite some time. I'm going to change him to Interceptor at our next vet visit. If you are going to be traveling anywhere in the South, they definitely need to be protected. I've seen a dog suffering from heartworms, and it is terrible!!!!

| Wow! I can't imagine a vet saying that because heartworms can be so deadly for our little guys. But, I am in an area that has a real problem with heartworms, so IDK.

| Most area in some states have had alot of flooding this year. I would think if you were traveling you would want it. I'm telling you that they are saying misquetoes are so bad this year from all the water and some have found that IL has had west nile. They are thinking that they will be caring many diseases. I would say protect your puppies and dogs. Heartworms can be really bad. I just make sure I don't give anything but one thing at a time to the dogs, shots or whatever. That way there little systems aren't overloaded.

| If there have been zero reported cases in your area, I wouldn't use it. I think it is moving West though, so maybe look on Google to see if there any cases in your area? If there are, I'd use it.

We aren't planning on doing any traveling. But that doesn't mean someone else, who may be visiting this area doesn't have it.

| I live in the SF Bay Area, CA and have had Yorkies for 18 years and none of mine have been on heartworm preventatives and I travel with them and everything and have never had a problem. Heartworm medicine is a very toxic chemical if your dogs don't need it. Unless you have a vet who is ill informed, they would know what you need in your area and I would go by what they say.

| I live in an area where there hasn't been a case of heartworms in years. BUT that being said, my vet put mine on heartworm medication last month (just a single dose) because we were travelling to Kansas City and Texas. They do not need to continue it now.

Although I would be nervous not to use it, if you live in one of those areas of Idaho where there isn't any heartworm activity, your vet might be right. If they really don't think you need it, maybe you don't. If I decided to go with the vet's recommendations, I would want to be notified of any cases in the area though.

| I wouldn't use it if your vet says you are in area that doesn't need it. This is one med that vets really push hard, so if your vet isn't and you trust him/her, I'd forgo the meds unless you will be traveling to another region - and then it is a single dose.

| We definitely have to use it here. As someone said, we have mosquitoes as big as planes, also.
