I was reading other threads, including ones about ignorant people just wanting "teacup" yorkies...and it got me thinking about Tyce's size. Let me assure you that I fell in love with his cute little face and the way he cuddled with his toy before I found out that his parents were only 2.5 and 3.7 pounds.

ANYWAY, he is 1.7 pounds at 15 weeks...which I would consider very small. I'm not worried for now because he is healthy, but for anyone else who has a smaller pup like Tyce (and has the experience) what are certain things I should be really careful about/look for/watch other than his trechea and such...I already have him wearing his puppia and buddybelt whenever we go out and about!

The small ones have special needs that can only be met by a person who has an understanding of those needs and the time to devote to them. Owners of very small dogs might prefer to house train such dogs in a
litter type box, wee pads or alternatively have a small fenced in area outside which (INCLUDES THE TOP BEING COMPLETELY FENCED OVER OR ENCLOSED AS WELL).

hes a litter box dog! so funny but soooo practical! and he never goes outside without me and on a leash.

Physically, the smaller dogs are more prone to injury. I would be extra careful to try to limit his jumping on and off furniture or going up and down stairs.

We have a male that is 2.5 pounds and decided one day he was in too much of a hurry to go down ALL the stairs (all 5 of them). He skipped the last on, jumping from the 2nd, managed to land wrong, knocked himself out and injurred his knee.

That's so funny, my pup is 15 weeks and 1.7 lbs too! He's way to brave for his size though, he managed to get past my every effort of blocking the stairs. He's great at going up, but he stumbles sometimes going down. I get so worried when he goes too quickly and falls down the last step or something. He rolled down 2 last night. He hasn't hurt himself yet, but I just wish he'd learn when he falls and not try again until he was bigger! It's a good thing my stairs are carpeted or we would have had an injury by now...

I'm so glad you posted this. My Bella is 14 weeks and is only 1.6lbs. The vet tech told us she was 1.9lbs at her 1st vet check, but when I took her for shots a few days ago, said that it was written down as 1.6 then and she's still 1.6! I wanted a small dog, but I was thinking an adult who is at least 5-10 lbs. But, I love her dearly and hopefully, she will get much bigger. So anyway, I am curious too to find out the things I should be wary of.

I DO have to be careful with her also, though, with the jumping off of stuff. She'll fall asleep on my lap, but wake up suddenly and try to launch herself off of the couch to get to the cat!

And she often jumps from the 2nd step to the floor. She is a fearless lil thing!

My little boy Meaty (yes Meaty) was the same size at that age. He is now 25 weeks and on a good day he weighs 3 pounds the problem that we had with him over our bigger girl was the low blood sugar, he got it very easily even if his breakfast was a little late or if we gave him treats and he didn't eat enough puppy food.

Jeter is 9 months old and only 2 pounds 6 ounces. Thankfully I have not had any health problems with him, his vet said he is healthy.He has had some test done for Kidney's and other things but every thing has came back good. I keep Nutrical in the fridge at all times and I will give it to him if it is needed, like before shots of his bath because it stresses him out. He has never really had a spell but just to be safe I have it. He is a dare devil so I have to watch that he stay's safe while playing. I have puppy stairs for him to use to get on and off the couch but he only uses them to get up..he is alway's trying to jump down

I also keep a bell on him so that we hear him at all times, he can get underfoot a lot but if you shuffle while you walk you wont step on them

Scooter's the same way, I really have to watch that he's eating enough! I haven't been able to find Nutrical yet in Canada, so my 'quick fix' remedy is honey, but that cannot be used to supplement his blood sugar daily, so close monitering of his eating habits is necessary.

My baby is now 18 months old, weighs 3 lbs. 9 oz. I am really blessed----she has had no health problems whatsoever. She is never outside without a leash. I really have to watch her about jumping off couch, chairs, etc.

Oh these little ones can be fragile...KiKi is almost 8 months and weighs 2.8 lbs...and she did have problems with her sugar levels early on...I keep EnerCal on hand at all times and although I do not use this daily anymore..it comes in handy when she may not be eating as well as she should.
Enercal is a molases based supplement that is used for pups that are picky eaters...this helps regulate their sugar level and also stimulates their appetite. It is available online at californiapetsupplies.com - These are about $3.75 a tube....
For Canadians - it is much cheaper to ship to US address if available
